Three organizations are recognized by theUnited States Department of Education to accredit teacher preparation programs: National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC) Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) Montessori Council of California represents MACTE accredited teacher education programs, their students and Montessori schools

  3. Title 5 of the California Code of Regulations, section 80105 (f) allows the Commission in conjunction with the State Superintendent of Public Instruction to establish criteria for accepting training that takes place outside of a regionally accredited institution of higher education. We seek acceptance ofMontessori Teacher Preparation Program accredited by Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education(MACTE)  to satisfy coursework for the Child Development Permits

Montessori Early Childhood Coursework* & Child Development Permit coursework requirements: Montessori Early Childhood Coursework: Child Growth and Development 2 semester units Observation in Child Development 1 semester unit Child, Family & Community 3 semester units Curriculum: Practical Life – Self-help skills 3 semester units Sensorial – perceptual/motor training 3 semester units Language Arts – pre-reading & reading 3 semester units Mathematics – concrete to abstract 3 semester units Cultural & Life Sciences 3 semester units Music, Movement & Art 3 semester units Classroom Leadership 1 semester unit Total: 25 Semester Units Supervised Field Experience Practicum I – 270 hours 3 semester units Practicum II – 270 hours 3 semester units Total Including Field Experience: 31 Semester Units *MACTE Accredited – Montessori Teacher Education Center San Francisco Bay Area

VIEW: Not-Accepting Alternative Providers for ECE Coursework Non-acceptance of the Montessori coursework by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing negatively impacts the Montessori adult learner. • Excluded from “First Five” career incentive grants, stipends, and other benefits • Excluded from early childhood employment at State funded preschools • Excluded from societal recognition of their academic achievement • Financial barrier to higher level education

  7. - Inequity in Education - financial barrier to higher level education To obtain the Child Development Permit the Montessori teacher pays twice: • for the Montessori coursework, and • for the college/university transcript reflecting the Montessori coursework College/University transcript cost more than the Montessori coursework!

View: Accepting Alternative Providers for ECE coursework For the adult learner:CTC recognition of Montessori coursework provides an incentive to apply the coursework towards higher level education. For colleges/universities:Montessori adult learners have incentive to seek higher levels of education

California precedent for acceptance of MACTE accredited coursework: Community Care Licensing accepts Montessori coursework on the adult learner’s transcript: Policy #101216.1(c)(2)(d)“Approved schools, colleges or universities, including correspondence courses offered by the same,means those approved/authorized by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Postsecondary Education, or by the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education.” from Manual of Policies and Procedures, Community Care Licensing, Division Health and Human Services Agency, Department of Social Services

  11. We seek acceptance ofcoursework provided by Montessori Teacher Preparation Programs accredited by Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education (MACTE) to satisfy early childhood coursework for the Child Development Permits
