  1. Multi-Purpose Arm Cycle Ergometer (M-PACE) Minneapolis Adaptive Design & Engineering (MADE) Program Minneapolis VA Health Care System University of Minnesota

  2. Motivation for development of M-PACE • Post-flap surgical recovery of persons with SCI • Flap surgeries are often used to heal pressure injuries • Post-flap surgical recovery includes up to six weeks of bed rest • Muscle atrophy, depression, anxiety, sleep disturbance, etc. • Needed engaging fully supine exercise for SCI patients

  3. Multi-Purpose Arm Cycle Ergometer (M-PACE)

  4. Fully supine exercise

  5. Can be used on either side of the bed

  6. Partially reclined exercise

  7. Seated in bed exercise

  8. Exercise in rooms with isolation precautions

  9. Adjustable for seated and standing exercise

  10. Exercise game for rehabilitation

  11. Outcome measure built-in for tracking rehabilitation progress

  12. Accepts various quick-attach handles

  13. Allows in-phase or out-of-phase cycling

  14. Machines “nest” together to save space

  15. Technology transfer information • Patent pending (issues on July 9, 2018) • 20160258573 – Exercise machine and method for use in a supine position • Continuation patent pending • Technology owned by the Department of Veterans Affairs and the University of Minnesota • Market Analysis Estimate • $70M - $275M • Seeking a licensee to commercialize the technology

  16. Regulatory information • Regulation: 890.5370 Non-measuring exercise equipment • Product Code: ION • Classification: Class I • GMP Exempt from QSR • except for Records and • Complaint Files
