    3. Los florecimientos algales excesivamente densos (generalmente más de un millón de células por litro) tienen la capacidad de consumir el oxígeno del agua, y si las especies que los forman producen toxinas, pueden ocasionar intoxicaciones; en ambos casos afectan a peces y biota acuática en general. Bajo estas condiciones al fenómeno se le llama Florecimiento Algal Nocivo (FAN). Los FAN pueden causar o no cambios de color en el agua. Aun cuando los FAN son más frecuentes en el mar también ocurren en esteros, lagunas y lagos.
