  1. Plagiarism-Detection Software Overview Developed by Alex Wolfe, TurnItInAdapted with permission by Crystal Nielsen, NNU www.turnitin.com

  2. Turnitin’s Purpose • To deter plagiarism • To hold students accountable • To determine the similarity of text to sources • To enhance teaching and student learning Send students to Plagiarism.org, a sister site to TurnItIn, for help in understanding plagiarism

  3. The Premise: Digital Submission Students or instructors submit papers digitally through the TurnItIn application. This can be done through TurnItIn.com or in ANGEL.

  4. The Premise: Extensive Search • TurnItIn searches a number of sources for matches: • A current and archived copy of the publicly accessible Internet (more than 13 billion Web pages indexed) • 2. Thousands of newspapers, magazines, books, and scholarly journals • 3. More than 130 million student papers previously submitted to Turnitin since 1996

  5. The Premise: Originality Report TurnItIn returns a color-coded Originality Report to the students or the instructor. A percentage shows the extent of possible content matches.

  6. Benefits • Provides resources to assist in teaching research and writing skills • Deters plagiarism before it happens; provides documentation if it does • Saves time in the investigation of the originality of student work • Allows for efficient verification of works cited

  7. Three Ways to Use TII • Through TurnItIn.com, by setting up Assignment inboxes for students to submit their own papers • Through TurnItIn.com, by using the QuickSubmit feature for you to simply evaluate an occasional paper that seems suspicious • Through ANGEL, by setting up TurnItIn assignments for student submission

  8. Using TurnItIn.com Assignments If you plan to use TII extensively • Contact NNU’s E-Learning Services to request an account • Log in and change your temporary password • Create Classes • Create Assignments • Your students submit papers

  9. Using QuickSubmit If you plan to use TII sparingly • Contact NNU’s E-Learning Services to request an account • Log in and change your temporary password • Enable QuickSubmit • You submit papers
