Bellwork 1/23/12 • What three continents surround the Mediterranean Sea? • What direction does a latitude line run? • What direction does a longitude line run? • What types of things do you find on a physical map? • What types of things do you find on a political map? • What types of things do you find on a climate map?

  3. Early History 3000 B.C – 750 B.C. • Move from nomadic to sedentary. • Agricultural revolution • Beginning of writing. • Beginning of trade. • Beginnings of law and order. • *Civilization!*

  4. Classical History (Greece and Rome) 750 B.C. – 476 A.D. • Rise in art, architecture, education, science, inventions, philosophy, etc. • Large unified empires with single leaders. • Wealth • Massive organized and trained armies • Trade – connecting the world.

  5. Middle Ages 476 A.D. – 1453 A.D. • Loss of literacy and science • No large empires. • Large gap between rich and poor. • Christian church has the power in Europe. • IN MIDDLE EAST: Islam begins and grows (622) • **Clash between two monotheistic religions**

  6. RENAISSANCE: 1453-1700 • Europeans “look back” to the Classical period. • Rise of science, invention, art, architecture, cities. • Countries become unified empires under a king. • Wealth.

  7. Enlightenment and Industrialization: 1700-1900 • Industrial revolution = inventions and new products. • Rise of factories and urban centers. • People want independence from kings! • Europe seeks to control the world.

  8. Modern History: 1900-2011 • Two World Wars. • Globalization and technology.

  9. Timeline Assignment • Create a timeline that starts at 3000 B.C. and ends at 2011. • Space out markers every 250 years. (3000 B.C., 2750 B.C., 2500 B.C., etc) • Color these spans of time different colors and create a legend that explains what each color means. • Early History • Classical Period • Middle Ages • Renaissance • Enlightenment and Industrialism • Modern History

Greece wins the Persian Wars • 336 B.C: Alexander the Great unifies Greek city-states • 323 B.C. Alexander dies and empire is divided. • 509 B.C- 476 A.D. Roman Empire. • 563 B.C. Buddha lives- begins Buddhism. • 241 B.C. – 146 B.C. Punic Wars (against Carthage) • 27 B.C. – Augustus becomes emperor – end of republic • 4 B.C – Jesus Christ born • 313 A.D. – Christianity accepted religion in Rome. • 330 A.D. Constantine moved the capital of Rome to Constantinople. • 476 A.D. End of Roman Empire and beginning of Middle Ages

  11. 527: Justinian I becomes Byzantine emperor; 590: Gregory I becomes first monk elected pope; 622: Muhammad begins Islam. 962: Beginning of the Holy Roman Empire 1054: Catholic and Orthodox churches split. 1095-1192: The Crusades. 1215: Magna Carta signed in England. 1337-1453: Hundred Years’ War between France and England. 1346: beginning of Bubonic Plague 1450: Florence becomes center of Italian Renaissance. 1453: Fall of Byzantine Empire - End of the Middle Ages. 1455: First book printed on the Gutenberg Printing Press.
