Literary Terms: “Thank You Ma’am” Unit 1- The Short Story

Characterization • *Story Focus: Physical Description • Review: The process of revealing the character in a story (see “Most Dangerous Game” PowerPoint/Cornell notes) • While reading “Thank You Ma’am” notice the physical descriptions which allow us to get a better understanding of the characters’ personalities

Setting • Where and when a story takes place • The setting is usually established through description • Sometimes narration or dialogue reveal the location and time the story takes place • Where and when does “Thank You Ma’am” take place?” You have just described the setting.

3rd Person Omniscient • Omniscient- The “all-knowing” narrator telling the story who can tells us about the past, present, and future. • Like a god is telling the story • Ex. “Thank You Ma’am” and “The Interlopers” (Week 3 assigned reading)

Dialogue versus Dialect Dialogue Dialect The sounds, spelling, grammar, and diction used by a specific people How various people speak A major technique of characterization that reveals the social or geographic status of a character • Direct speech between characters in a literary work • A conversation, lines spoken by a character or characters in a play, essay, story, or novel • Good dialogue provides characterization or advances the plot
