  1. Lesson 11: Pure Substance or Mixture

  2. Characteristic Properties • An attribute that can be used to help identify a substance. A characteristic property is not affected by the amount of a substance.

  3. Pure Substances • A substance that is either an element or a compound.

  4. Element • A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means.

  5. Compound • A pure substance consisting of two or more elements combined. • For example sodium chloride consists of the elements sodium and chlorine.

  6. Mixtures • Two or more elements or compounds that are mixed together but not chemically combined.

  7. Heterogeneous Mixture • A mixture in which the components are not evenly mixed so that different parts of the mixture have different compositions.

  8. Homogeneous Mixture • A mixture in which the components are evenly mixed so that every part of the mixture is the same as any other.
