  4. Tom • Is not afraid to show off his mistress. • Buys Myrtle a dog • Has a furnished apartment for Myrtle. • Brakes Myrtle’s nose.

Myrtle • Lives in the Valley of Ashes with her husband. • Treats her husband, George Wilson, as if he is a ghost. • Having an affair with Tom Buchanan. • Buys the Town Tattle, waits for a new taxi cab, wears her best dress. • Gets her nose broken after screaming the words “Daisy! Daisy! Daisy!” • Says George isn’t fit to lick her shoe.

  6. George Wilson • Is married to Myrtle • Lives in the Valley of Ashes and owns a repair shop. • Is waiting for Tom to sell him a car.

  7. Symbols: Valley of Ashes • A desolate area where empty people labor • Symbolizes the “wasteland mentality” of the materialistic middle class. • Spiritual emptiness of society • “Watched over” by the giant eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg.
