  1. How Do I Apply For DSA Student Finance? Disabled Students Allowance (DSA) is additional support on top of any student finance for students with impairments and disabilities in the United Kingdom. It is used to pay for study-related costs, such as non-medical help, equipment, travel and general, such as printing and photocopying. Students with long term health illnesses, mental health problems and other disabilities may be eligible for DSA, which is not based on household income, but rather specifically offered based on each student's unique study needs. Some of the benefits of DSA for students include specialist equipment, such as a laptop and specialist software to non-medical helpers, such as a note-taker or a British Sign Language interpreter. In addition to this, students eligible for DSA can get an allowance for additional travel costs to attend the course based on the disability along with a general allowance, which covers having additional copies of documents printed for proofreading, for example. The amount of support received is based on each individual's needs and not household income. This is a government grant which does not need to be repaid, unlike your student loan. Full or part- time undergraduate or postgraduate students can get up to £32,546 a year for support for 2022 to 2023 academic year. The amount can be used for equipment, helpers and general costs. The travel allowance covers study- related travel costs you may have, which is assessed based on each individual case. Full or part-time undergraduate and postgraduate students can get up to £31,831 a year for support for the 2021 to 2022 academic year. If you are wondering if you qualify for DSA, it is offered to students with specific learning difficulties, such as dyslexia, along with those with mental health conditions, such as depression or anxiety. Those with physical disabilities can also apply, including those that use a wheelchair, crutches or require special keyboards, for example. Those who are visually impaired, deaf or with a hearing impairment can also apply, as well as those with long term health conditions, such as chronic heart disease or cancer. In order to be eligible, you must meet the standard Student Finance eligibility requirements to apply for DSA. One of the most important things is that you must be studying for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree and the course must last a minimum of one year. Application is dependent on the course you are studying and whether you are applying for any other student finance. Full-time undergraduate students can apply via the internet, only once they have applied for other student finance. If you are not applying for student finance and do not have an email account, you can post the application form. Applications must also be submitted for full time or part-time undergraduate and postgraduate students. You will need to check your application form or online account to see what evidence you are going to need to submit. Once your application is completed, you may be asked to attend a needs assessment.

  2. You must only book your assessment once you are asked to do so. The DSA will only pay for the assessment once they ask, so ensure you do not book beforehand. After the assessment, you will be advised what equipment and any other support you will be offered to make your studying easier and help you complete your course. About Us: Access for Students is a United Kingdom-based DSA assessment specialist, government registered to provide students with an assessment, identifying the equipment and support they may need in order to complete their studies. The company comprises a friendly and knowledgeable team, offering comprehensive advice for students who are eligible for DSA and have been told by their funding body to get an assessment of their needs. Access for Students does not provide funding. Their service is to help students identify what they need to complete their studies, such as a sign language interpreter or a specialist note-taking. Full details can be found on their information-packed website at https://www.accessforstudents.co.uk.
