  1. IODINE-131

  2. PROPERTIES OF IODINE-131 • Radioactive iodine • Produced by the fission of uranium atoms during operation of nuclear reactors • Also produced by plutonium/uranium in the detonation of nuclear weapons • Has a half-life of about 8 days • Emit beta particles upon radioactive decay • 53 protons, 78 neutrons

  3. MEDICAL USES • Treats Hyperthyroidism (thyroid gland is overactive and produces too much thyroxin) • Treats some types of thyroid cancer

  4. INDUSTRIAL USES • Localize leaks in drinking water supply systems • Common gamma-emitting industrial tracer to determine underground flows and leaks

  5. WHY IODINE-131? • The thyroid gland absorbs Iodine • Substance is easily excreted • Short range of radiation only concentrated in a certain area • Dissolves in water  easily ingested

  6. THANK YOU FOR LISTENING!
