  1. 25.1 Animals TUNICATE

  2. What is an animal? (KINGDOM) - multicellular - heterotrophic (doesn’t produce own food) - eukaryotic (has nucleus and organelles) - no cell walls

  3. Two main classifications: 1) Invertebrates - no backbone - 95% of all animals, 33 phyla - insects, sea stars, jellyfish, sponges, mollusks

  4. The group is defined by a lack of a spinal cord, so it includes many different species from different clades. • Invertebrates are not a clade!

  5. Chordates - have four characteristics: • Dorsal (back) hollow nerve cord • a notochord (note a cord) • A tail • Pharyngeal (fuhrinjeeul) pouches

  6. Notochord- a supporting rod that runs through the body below the nerve cord - most animals only have the notochord in embryo stage

  7. A vertebrate (has backbone) is a subcategory of chordate • Vertebrates = some fish, amphibians, mammals, birds

  8. Animal Homeostasis (internal regulation) • 1) Gathering and Responding to Information (Uses nervous and muscular system)

  9. Obtaining Oxygen and Nutrients (respiratory, circulatory, digestive systems)

  10. Eliminating CO2 and other wastes (ammonia) (excretory system in complex animals)
