8. Pages of the Exegesis Paper - notes • Page 1. Title Page • Select a title which clearly and concisely describes the content of your paper and catches a reader's interest.

9. Page 2. Table of Contents • Gives an overview of the sections you are using. • I. Introduction • II. Main Body • III. Summary & Conclusion • IV. Bibliography

10. Page 3. Introduction • Background Statement - Open your paper with a brief discussion relating to your passage.  Include what research has been done on it before.

11. Problem Statement - Explain the reason you are writing this paper on this Bible passage. For example: I was assigned this Bible passage, and I plan to research what this passage means.

12. Purpose of the Study – Ask significant questions of what you hope to achieve by undertaking this research.

13. Pages 4, 5, 6 (can be additional pages) • Main Body of the Paper - Everything you include in this section of the paper should directly address your problem statement.  If it doesn't, don't put it in your paper. 

14. Greek/ English Translation - • Find the Greek of your passage online and copy & paste it into your paper. • Find 3 different English versions of your text and copy them into your paper. E.G. New American Bible, King James’ Version, and the New International Version.

17. Background • This will help you identify the structure, key words and phrases of the passage.

18. Historical Context – Discuss aspects of the authorship, main persons, events, places, dates.

19. Literary Genre - identify the genre of the text (narrative, prophecy, law, genealogy, parable, prayer, dialogue or conversation, speech, etc.).    

20. Word Study – do mini word studies of the most important key terms and recognize unique vocabulary, syntax, play words, allusions, rhythm, accents, rhetoric, etc.

21. How to do the Word Study -Let’s take the example of Matthew 5: 1-12. -Decide 2 words that you want to complete the word study on. -We will choose Blessed and Peacemaker for our examples.

22. Go to dictionary.com to find the definition for the word - Blessed - consecrated; sacred; holy; sanctified: the Blessed Sacrament. (dictionary.com) Peacemaker - a person, group, or nation that tries to make peace, especially by reconciling parties who disagree, quarrel, or fight. (dictionary.com)

23. Then using Bible Gateway, find one place in the Old Testament and one place in the New Testament where each word is used.

25. Check the right hand column on Bible Gateway after you type in Blessed. You will see a list of where the word is used in the Old Testament, and where it is used in the New Testament.

26. If you click on Genesis, you will see a list of times Blessed is used. For this example, we will copy the first entry and put it in our paper: Genesis 1:22 God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the water in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth.” (Bible Gateway)

27. When we look on the right hand column under New Testament, we see that the word Blessed is used 69 times.

28. If you click on the last book of the Bible, Revelation, you will see the times Blessed is used. We will copy the first entry - Revelation 1:3 Blessed is the one who reads aloud the words of this prophecy, and blessed are those who hear it and take to heart what is written in it, because the time is near. 29. Complete the same exercise for Peacemaker. When we type Peacemaker into Bible Gateway, we see it is only used 2 times in the Bible.

30. We will copy those 2 entries into our paper - Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. (Bible Gateway) James 3:18 Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness. (Bible Gateway)

31. Apply the same word study to 2 words from your passage using Dictionary.com and Bible Gateway.

32. Most Important Section • The New Testament Reveals the Old Testament – identify how the chosen text fulfills what was written in the Old Testament. Use 3 specific examples from the Old Testament to show how Jesus fulfills what was written before Him.

33. Example • For example, if you choose the passage on the Last Supper, you will show in 3 different passages in the Old Testament how the Passover was preparation for the Last Supper in the New Testament.

35. When you look up your passage on USCCB, you will see small green letters after some of the verses. Scroll to the very bottom of the page, and you will see stars with a footnote following each star.

36. Each footnote explains the verse in greater detail. Find 3 verses in your passage where the footnote talks about something from the Old Testament.

For example, in Matthew 4 - we read the following footnotes that have to do with the Old Testament: * [4:2] Forty days and forty nights: the same time as that during which Moses remained on Sinai (Ex 24:18). The time reference, however, seems primarily intended to recall the forty years during which Israel was tempted in the desert (Dt 8:2). * [4:5–7] The devil supports his proposal by an appeal to the scriptures, Ps 91:11a, 12. Unlike Israel (Dt 6:16), Jesus refuses to “test” God by demanding from him an extraordinary show of power. * [4:9] The worship of Satan to which Jesus is tempted is probably intended to recall Israel’s worship of false gods. His refusal is expressed in the words of Dt 6:13.

38. These 3 footnotes are to be copied into your paper to explain how what Jesus is doing in the New Testament is fulfilling the Old Testament.

40. On the left hand column of this website, we see the prophecies from the Old Testament that foretold what would happen in the New Testament.

41. On the right hand column, we have the New Testament passage that fulfills the Old Testament prophecy.

42. If you can see your New Testament passage on the right hand column, you can find the Old Testament prophecy that directly relates to it. You can then copy both passages and paste them into your paper.

43. Theology and Message – identify the main ideas and issues raised and solved by the text. • How does the deep meaning of your passage lead us closer to each person in the Trinity - the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit?

44. This section is your own writing. You do not need to use any sources for this. Explain how your Bible passage leads us closer to God.

45. Final and Last Page • Summary and Conclusion - Needs to match the introduction. Provide a summary of the main findings of the study and give clear answers to the Statement of the Problem.

46. Bibliography • Provide data relating to ALL the books and articles used in your research, not just those you cited in your paper.  You should also include resources used from the internet or other electronic resources.

48. Footnotes / Quotations - you may either use footnotes at the bottom of each page, endnotes at the end of your paper, or place your source immediately after you use it. • Whatever footnotes you have used in the past on your work will be acceptable.

49. Preparation/Research • Step 1:  Passage Study -- Read your chosen passage in English (in three different versions) and then in Greek.  This will help you identify the structure, key words and phrases of the passage.

50. Make a list of ideas about what you have been previously told about the text.  Being aware of any ideas you may hold regarding a Bible passage will help you consciously test them when you make your interpretation.
