  1. THE BIO-POEM Mini -Research ActivityGoals: REQUIRED ACTIVITIES: Use research skills in finding credible sources and taking notes about a historic figure from America. Use correct works cited form using the Oslis website. Use a correctly done internal citation. Create a pop-up person for presentation to the class. EXTENSION ACTIVITY: Create a timeline of the historic figure’s life.

FINDING A TOPIC • Think about your interests – sports, history, entertainment, science, etc. and choose a person who is involved in your interest. • Click on the link below of famous Americans if you need help thinking of a person you want to research. http://www.kidinfo.com/American_History/Famous_Historical_People.htm

Taking Notes When taking notes for research purposes, you MUST make sure to: • REMEMBER to write the Works Cited information FIRST in case you are interrupted or run out of time during the class period. Make sure to find ALL source information that is available. IF you need help with this, ask for it! • Make sure you include the page number of the note (if your source has more than one page) so you can use it in your internal citations. • Briefly summarize what you are reading in YOUR OWN WORDS and in NOTE form (no sentences). You can avoid plagiarizing this way. • When quoting the author’s exact words, use quotations marks. • Avoid using Wiki sources (like Wikipedia), sources where the source information is incomplete, and sources that contain students’ projects. More reliable sources will end with .gov, .edu, or .org

  4. Writing the Bio-Poem BIO-POEM DIRECTIONS: Line 1: Write the first name (and middle or “nickname”) of your person in BOLD FACE LETTERS. Line 2: Write two or three adjectives that describe this person. Use commas to separate each adjective. Line 3: Write one or two titles that show his or her occupation. Separate with commas. Line 4: Write when and/or where this person was born and his/her parents’ names or description, (born in___to___) Line 5: Write “Who” and something he/she achieved during his/her career, Line 6: Write “who” and something else that this person achieved besides their career, Line 7: Find a memorable quote about or by this person. Put it in quotation marks. Line 8: Write “who” and the date/age/cause of his/her death (If he or she is not deceased, tell what he/she is doing now.) Line 9: Write the person’s last name in BOLD FACE LETTERS.

Bio-Poem Example  PEARL - a unique, caring singer and humanitarian, born in 1918 to a minister and his wife, who had a string of hit records and won a Tony for her role in Hello Dolly, (Lewis 1) who was known for her charitable work as an international envoy for AIDS fundraising, (BHS 1) “…one of the most enduring and admired personalities of the age.” (Knowledge Cards 1) who died in 1990 at age 72 of a heart attack, (BHS 1) • BAILEY NOTE: MAKE SURE TO INCLUDE WHERE YOU FOUND YOUR FACT INSIDE A SET OF PARENTHESES. THIS IS CALLED AN INTERNAL CITATION.

  7. Creating Your Pop-up Person IF you aren’t a great artist, Google your person’s name and go to Images. If you want a cartoon-like image, Google your person’s name and the word “caricature” and go to Images.
