OBJECTIVE… To use independent study, mind mapping and media clips to find out more about fertility treatments. • DID YOU KNOW: • To be infertile means being unable to have a baby. • Up to 14% of UK couples who want to have children suffer from fertility problems and for many of them it brings great emotional pain.

  3. OUTCOMES… Grade C All will be able to describe the different fertility treatments available. Grade B • Most will be able to explain what they think is the biggest problem with fertility treatments and why. • Grade A/A* • Some will be able to give an opinion on ethical questions raised by the use of fertility treatments.   6. Medical Treatment for Infertility THE FACTS… Around 1 in 7 couples (14%) in the UK have problems being able to conceive a child. There are many different factors involved in becoming pregnant and if there is a fault in any factor at any stage, then infertility can occur. Infertilityis the inability to conceive children naturally. On July 25th 1978, Louise Brown, the world’s first baby produced using IVF was born. Today, around 6000 babies are born every year in the UK as a result of IVF treatment. However, IVF only has a 15% success rate and can cost around £2,500 for every attempt. • Importance of Infertility Treatment • Infertility is an increasing issue in the UK with around 12-14% of couples unable to conceive. • Male infertility is a particular problem with around 1.5m men in the UK experiencing fertility problems. • in 2007, 12% of all births in the UK were as a result of fertility treatment - this shows how important it is to many thousands of couples. • It is part of human nature to want to have a child, it is how humanity continues. Many people suffer from depression and other mental health issues due to infertility. Any child born using DI (donor insemination) since 1st April 2005, now has the legal right, once 18, to discover who their genetic parents are.

  9. Problems with fertility treatments… What problems might arise from the use of fertility treatments? Mind map your ideas – use the prompts to help you… Does it work first time? There are NO GUARANTEES that fertility treatment will work at all. Many attempts over several years may be needed. Egg, Embryo and Sperm donors Having a baby through a donor can be very difficult for one or both members of the couple as they have to come to terms with raising a child that is not biologically theirs – the child may also want to find their biological parents at a later date. Explain which of these you think would be the biggest problem and WHY. Fertility drugs... These are often required as part of fertility treatments and can have uncomfortable side-effects. Problems with fertility treatments... Relationships... Fertility treatments can place a real strain on a couples relationship. Cost? Fertility treatments are very expensive, whether for the couples themselves or the NHS – not all treatments are available on the NHS and there is a huge waiting list! Surrogacy The surrogate may find it hard to give up a baby they have carried for 9 months and the couple may feel distant from the baby or that they are not in control of the situation.

What do YOU think?… Some people claim that the money spent on INFERTILITY RESEARCH and INFERTILITY treatments could be better spent elsewhere – cancer research, finding/improving medicines, finding cures for life threatening diseases or improving the lives of those with disabilities. PLENARY… The description of a fertility treatment will come up – you need to name this treatment on your mini white board… The answer is… ARTIFICIAL INSEMINATION BY PARTNER or AIH It’s time for… NAME THAT FERTILITY TREATMENTS  Here we go… An egg is taken from the mother and fertilised in a test-tube using sperm from her partner (or a donor) and then placed in her womb where she carries it to full term. The answer is… IN-VITRO FERTILOSATION Or IVF Egg, sperm, or both of the couple are fertilised in a test-tube then placed in the womb of another woman who carries the baby to full term. The answer is… SURROGACY Both sperm and egg are provided by anonymous donors, fertilised in a test-tube then placed in the mothers womb The answer is… EMBRYO DONATION  The partners sperm is medically inseminated into the mothers womb.
