  4. SPEECH PREPARATION • Fantasize • Sanitize • Categorize • Prioritize • Romanticize

  5. FANTASIZE & SANITIZE • FANTASIZE - List everything you can think of about the topic in a sheet of paper. SANITIZE - Cross out the ideas and keywords that aren’t relevant to the topic.

  6. GROUP ACTIVITY 1 • Choose a topic from below: • Environmental issues. • School Stress. • Australian Fast Food. “Fantasize” about the topic chosen and “Sanitize” it…..

  7. CATEGORIZE • After you have “Fantasize” and “Sanitize” your ideas, you are now ready to “Categorize” them. • Draw boxes on another sheet of paper. Have sub headings on each box and categorize your ideas carefully. • This makes it easier to put your ideas into paragraphs according to the sub headings of your topics.

  9. PRIORITIZE • Highlight the sub headings of the categorized ideas which are most important in the speech. • Remember not to highlight too many because if you are giving a short speech, you can’t fit too many ideas in your speech script.

ROMANTICIZE • This is the final part of speech preparation before writing a script. • To Romanticize, is to think of a suitable starting sentence and a finishing sentence. • Remember that these 2 sentences are very important as they give the listeners the final impression of your speech so make it powerful with impact in it….

  11. PICKING A GOOD TITLE • Here are some “do-it-yourself” titles to choose from… • The Idiot’s Guide to …………… • The 10 Commandments of …………… • The Truth about …………… These catchy titles often play with words to attract the reader or audience’s attention.

  13. THE IMPORTANCE OF EYE CONTACT • This is the most important part in any speech • My public speaking mentor once said to his class, “If you walk away from this class without mastering a single thing except eye contact…I will be more than satisfied”

  14. EYE CONTACT MADE EASY • Follow these steps and you will find learning eye contact is easier than you thought. • FIND HIM • HOLD HIM • KICK HIM • FIND ANOTHER

  16. VOICE PROJECTION • Remember to adjust the tone of your voice when speaking about a particular topic. Example, if you are talking about a tragedy or an emotional topic, talk in softer tones to enhance the effect of your message.

  17. GROUP ACTIVITY 2 • Form a group of 5 students. • Send one student up to speak on any topic. It must be impromptu. • The other 4 will judge him and find his weaknesses in the 4 areas mainly: • Eye Contact • Voice Projection • His use of Visual Aides • Body Gestures

FEAR CONTROL • Having butterflies in your stomach is caused by adrenaline. • Adrenaline is a hormone secreted by adrenal glands situated on top of each kidney like little caps. • Adrenaline increases heart rate and blood pressure as well as other symptoms to prepare the body for an emergency situation. • Public speaking isn’t an emergency control however adrenaline is still secreted. • Fortunately, adrenaline effects can be controlled.

  20. FEAR CONTROL • Repetitive Mantra. • Act Confident. • Talk as if everyone owed you money! • Smile!!  • Predetermine your Mind To Success. • Always Prepare Well…

  22. HOW CAN I START OFF? • Arouse curiosity! • Begin with an arresting fact/ statistic • Everyone loves stories so why not? - Therefore begin with an exciting incident. Never start with an apology. Never start with an inappropriate joke.

  23. HUMANIZE YOUR TALK • A personal story/recount. • Relieve your experience from it. • Be detailed not long-winded. • Stories grip audience attention at once. • Apply & Pushing “Hot Buttons”.

  24. PUSHING “HOT BUTTONS” • Hot buttons are subjects/issues that arouse emotions. • Relating the speech topic to your own personal experience. • Relating the topic to a sad fictional story.

  25. HUMOUR IN PUBLIC SPEAKING • If your audience are strangers, try to avoid using humour unless you are confident that your joke would not turn you into an embarrassment because people might not laugh or get your joke.

  26. DRAMATIZE YOUR TALK • Using “story dialogues.” • Speaking with contagious enthusiasm. • Demonstration of exhibit. • Effective use of body gestures. • Use your “area” like a super star.....

HOW TO SPEAK PERSUASIVELY • Essential when giving speeches/campaigns to ask of something from the audience. • For example, a STOP SMOKING campaign…. • Explaining the benefits • Talk in terms of other people’s interest • Threaten a Third Party • Show them you have points of agreement • Arouse in other’s an eager want • Throw down a challenge

If you do, here are ways to get more opportunities to do so….. • Running for guild posts in school for students. • Running for office in politics. • Joining the Toastmasters International. • Joining social campaigns. • Having a career in the communication/media field.
