  2. History • New Principal in 1995 • Increased efforts to “clean up” the school • Following the previous Good Conduct Code • Numerous violations and suspensions • Frustrated students, parents, & community

  3. History • New policy put in place during the late 90’s • Developed by the existing Administration • Mere Presence piece • Student’s perception of being “punished” for making the right decisions.

  4. Current Issues • New Principal in 2009 • New Administration Team in 2010 • Inconsistency with implementation • Different ways to interpret the Good Conduct Code • Continued discontent

  5. Moving Forward • Decision made by the Administration Team to re-visit the Good Conduct Code • Consistency and common sense • Serious discussions on Mere Presence • Community Involvement important

  6. Community Involvement • Students, Parents & Community have strong beliefs and opinions on the Good Conduct Code • Sense of Ownership & Involvement • Variety of ideas from others • Board Policy

  7. Committee Formation • Important to involve the following individuals: 1. Students 2. Parents/Community 3. Administration 4. School Board Member(s)

  8. Committee Formation • We want to identify individuals who are interested in solutions • Reach out to those who have been effected by the Good Conduct Code • Best for Students • Best for Clear Creek Amana

  9. Goals • Establish the standards by which students shall conduct themselves if they choose to participate in school activities • Participants shall commit themselves to meet the standards of this Good Conduct Code at all times and in all places

  10. Timeline • Explain our intentions to the Superintendent and School Board • Explain our intentions to the students, staff & community • May 2013 – Provide the opportunity for those who would like to serve on the committee (online) • June 2013 – Finalize the committee membership

Timeline • Have our first meeting in August of 2013 • Hold monthly meetings on the last Wednesday of each month from August 2013-February 2014 • Meetings will be held in the Library Conference Room at a time TBD • Submit our final copy of the Good Conduct Code to the School Board for their approval at the March 19, 2014 meeting • Implementation – 2014-2015 school year

  12. Create Definitions • Common Language 1. Competitions vs Events vs Performances? 2. Penalty vs Violation vs Offense? 3. Week = Mon-Fri or Mon-Sun? 4. Season = Include post season play? 5. Year = School year or calendar year?

  13. Activity Programs • What are the Activity Programs offered at Clear Creek Amana? 1. All Athletics (Trap Shooting, Archery, Dance) 2. All Fine Arts (Grades???) 3. School Royalty 4. Student Council 5. School Honors 6. Clubs

  14. Scenarios • You can’t possibly predict every scenario • Example (Mere Presence) A student goes to a party to pick up his/her friend(s) who had been drinking. While he/she waits for the friend(s) to grab their stuff, pictures are taken and posted on facebook which shows her at the party.

  15. Conduct & Penalties • Differences in Conduct • Should someone who gets in an altercation at school have the same penalty as someone who deals drugs? • Categories & Levels • First Offense, Second Offense, Third Offense, and subsequent offenses • Days, Weeks, Percentage of Season • 365?

  16. Student Assistance • Programs to help students • Can’t be just about punishment • Education 1. United Action for Youth 2. MECCA Services 3. University of Iowa 4. Local Law Enforcement

Student Assistance • Are we doing the right thing by taking something positive away from students? • What can we do to keep them engaged during their suspension time? • Do we have programs/curriculum in place to help educate students about making the right choices? • Peer Pressure – HS Students are going to make mistakes in judgement

  18. Appeal Process • Principal makes the final decision on violations of the Good Conduct Code • Student & Parent(s) do not agree • Appeal Process must be clear • Timeline of the Appeal • Appeal Team • Final Decision

  19. Student Awareness • Students must be made aware of the content of the Good Conduct Code • How is this done? • When is this done? • Student Handbook • Should students be required to sign something saying they understand the content of the Good Conduct Code?

Community Support • Policy was created with the input from the community in collaboration with school officials • Team effort with the same/similar Goals in mind • Must be communicated as such • Promote as a Community Policy • Make sure those who provided their time and energy into the policy-making process are acknowledged
