  1. Korea and the Policy of Containment • April 8 – 9, 2014 • Objective: Students will evaluate the policy of containment and the Korean War through text, timeline and an argumentative essay. Warm-Up: See next slide.

Warm-Up:Truman Doctrine and Marshall Plan Think like a Soviet: • Do you think the Soviet Union would accuse the US of using these policies to spread democratic influence in order to further peace in the world? OR • Do you think the Soviet Union would accuse the US of using these policies to help Europe rebuild for economic purposes for the US (trade, etc.)? Explain your choice. Rephrase the question to begin your answer.

  3. 1. Use the classroom atlas to locate North and South Korea. 2. Identify the two countries that share North Korea’s northern borders. Use directional terms (northwest, southwest, northeast, southeast, etc.) to pinpoint their relative location to North Korea. 3. Write a complete sentence with this information in your notebook.

  4. North Korea is located in East Asia and borders China to the northwest and Russia to the northeast.

  5. Korea is divided into North and South Korea along the 38th parallel. Find this on your atlas.

  6. The heavily-guarded buffer zone that divides North and South Korea and runs along the 38th parallel is called the DMZ.

  9. Timeline • Copy timeline from the board. • Complete this in your notebook from information in the textbook. Use complete sentences.
