  5. Mongols Rule China… • Kublai Khan (Genghis Khan’s grandson) * Friends with Marco Polo • New capital-Beijing • Mongol culture was much different from the Chinese, so they ruled but didn’t mix with the Chinese people • This was a “Golden age for China” 1200/1300s

  6. Marco Polo • Traveler, trader, writer • Travel from Italy to China • Friends w/ Kublai Khan • Wrote a book of his journeys • Educated and amazed Europeans of the wonders of China

Silk Road • Large trade network stretching 4,000 miles • China to SW Asia • Merchants used camels to travel across the desert and mountains • Travel was expensive and dangerous • Merchants had to pay taxes to many kingdoms along the way • So…only high priced goods could be transported this way
