  1. Gathering Information Microsoft, 2011 7th Grade Career GASP Project

  2. Review • What is the task you are working to complete? • In pairs discuss: • What is some of the information you need to find in order to complete the task? • What information is each person in your group expected to find? • Check your to-do list in Naviance • What sources of information did you brainstorm last class?

  5. Evaluating Websites • How do we know if the information is accurate? • What can we tell about the website by who wrote it? • What do connections to companies, schools, and other groups tell us about a website? • Does it matter if the site has advertisements? Are some ads more acceptable than others? • What is the difference between a .com, a .edu, a .gov, a .org, and a .net site? • How can you tell what the purpose of a site it? Does the purpose matter for our project? • How do the intended readers of a site affect its effectiveness for our project? Does the audience matter? • What about the technical issues of the site? What does it mean if you find broken links? • How does the date of information on the site matter?

  6. Evaluating Websites • Use the questions on the Internet Research handout to help you evaluate websites • Avoid Wikipedia – why?

  7. Evaluating Websites Example

  8. Helpful Websites • Naviance • Kids.gov – Careers • CareerOneStop • iseek Careers • Bureau of Labor Statistics Career Information for students • College Board – Major and Career Profiles • ACT – Map of College Majors, World of Work

  9. Taking Notes • There is certain information you need to gather from each source in order to avoid plagiarism. • What is plagiarism? • How can we avoid it? • Gather source information and give credit when you use the information • Paraphrase or use quotes

  10. Taking Notes • Today’s Date • To keep track of when you found the information) • Source citation • To keep track of where you got the information so you can credit the source later or return to it if needed • Subject of Notes • Record the questions you’re answering or the information your’re collecting • Ex. Job description – hours and setting

  11. Taking Notes • Notes • Do not copy and paste text from a website • If there’s a sentence you think is important to copy exactly, put it in quotation marks. • Paraphrase! • Put the text into your own words. • Paraphrasing requires changing words, changing the sentence structure, but not changing the meaning. • It may help to read a paragraph and then try to write what you learned from the paragraph without looking at it. Then check back to make sure what you wrote has the same meaning.

  12. Paraphrase Example Original text on Engineering Technicians: • Engineering technicians use the principles and theories of science, engineering, and mathematics to solve technical problems in research and development, manufacturing, sales, construction, inspection, and maintenance. Others work in quality control, inspecting products and processes, conducting tests, or collecting data.

Others work in quality control, inspecting products and processes, conducting tests, or collecting data. Paraphrase: Engineering technicians have to do things like solve problems, do research, come up with new ideas, make or fix equipment, and test products to make sure they are working.

  14. Taking Notes • Ideas • The final section of the notes is where you analyze what you’ve read and recorded. • Record your ideas and reactions to the information, ways to use it in your paper, your opinions, or further research you need to do on the information

  15. Taking Notes • A new note-taking form/survey will be needed for each new source • Remember to use at least 4 sources (for an excellent rating on the rubric) • Try to use one sources beyond the internet like interviews or books
