  2. Aims of this meeting: • To remind ourselves what CHABLIS is all about! • To pick up the thread and re-focus ourselves…

CHABLIS History(ie. how we got where we are today) • Idea “born” post Neumayer season (1999) • University groups approached (Leeds, UEA, Bristol, IC) • Proposal submitted December 2000; funding announced May 2001 • CHABLIS commenced Oct 2001 • 2001/02 E.S. Shackleton didn’t arrive at Halley • Field work component delayed 1 year

Three research foci: • Seasonal studies of oxidant chemistry in coastal Antarctica: • What is the annual climatology of radical precursors in the Antarctic troposphere? • Is there evidence for radical chemistry during the Antarctic winter period? • Can we balance the budget of tropospheric O3 during spring/summer?

  5. Three research foci… 2. Year round studies of the NOy budget in coastal Antarctica: • What controls the NOy budget throughout the year? • How does this affect tropospheric NOx and ice core nitrate?

  6. Three research foci… 3. Air/snow exchange mechanisms of trace gases : • What is the connection between snow and the boundary layer concentrations of key species? • What is driving the firn air profiles of halocarbons and alkyl nitrates?

  10. The Timescale • Phase 1: Summer 2003/04: Initial studies and install overwintering instruments • Phase 2: Winter 2004: Overwinter studies (NOy budget, air/snow exchange) • Phase 3: Summer 2004/05: Summer intensive (focus on oxidants)
