  1. Micro-Refractometer-Spindle-Stage This short presentation shows the function of the internal refractometer on our micro-refractometer spindle stage. For further information please contact: Ulrike Medenbach Wissenschaftliche Fotografie • Mikroskopzubehör Bruno-Heide-Strasse 8 58456 Witten Tel.: ++49 (0) 2302 71769 Fax: ++49 (0) 2302 77635 ulli@ulrikemedenbach.de

  2. refractometer crystal unknown crystal immersion cell refractometer spindel object spindle For precise measurements of refractive indices, the crystal is mounted onto the object-spindle and oriented according to the spindle stage procedure. Subsequently the match between immersion and the oriented crystal is set by the λ-T-variation method. The measurement of the index of the immersion, and thus also of the crystal, is carried out by means of the internal refractometer which allows a precision of up to ± 0.0003.

  3. internal refractometer unknown crystal, drilled out with our microdrill internal refractometer: uniaxial, optically negative crystal, e.g. NaNO3, calcite, smithsonite The internal refractometer is an uniaxial crystal with perfectly known dispersion curves. It is mounted with its optical axis perpendicular to the refractometer-spindle. During a 360° revolution about this spindle, the actual index changes four times systematically between no and ne. At the point of match the refractometer crystal diasappears, and four independent values for the immersion, and thus also for the unknown crystal, can be calculated. Dispersion staining illumination increases the precision of the measurement.

  4. additional diaphragm in back focal plane crystal liquid aperture diaphragm Color effects during revolution of the refractometer crystal: index of refractometer crystal higher than that of the immersion Color effects during revolution of the refractometer crystal: index of refractometer crystal lower than that of the immersion Color effects during revolution of the refractometer crystal: match between refractometer crystal, immersion, and unknown crystal „Dispersion Staining“: only light of the wavelength of match between crystal and liquid can pass; the crystal is stained in this specific color.
