  1. Statistical Consulting on NKU’s Campus CINSAM Lunch Seminar Series Feb. 19, 2014

  2. How will you know if you have achieved your research goals? And better yet… How will you justify it and communicate it?

  3. Burkardt Consulting Center Co-Directors Dr. Dave Agard Dr. Joe Nolan Assistant Director Mary Lee Glore Student Analysts Craig Heard Jessica Farmer Kacie Kotnik

  4. What is the BCC? We provide statistical and mathematical support for a wide variety of projects.

  5. Our History • Founded in 2001 by Andy Long & Jim McKenney • Some past and current supporters of the center… • Tom Burkardt, 2003 Outstanding NKU alumnus (B.S. in Mathematics and Computer Science) • College of Arts and Sciences • Department of Mathematics and Statistics • CINSAM

  6. Our credentials Directors – PhD in Statistics Assistant Director – M.S. in Applied Statistics 4 additional PhD-level statisticians in department 16 PhD-level mathematicians in department Student Consultants – Junior or Senior majoring in statistics and/or mathematics

  7. Some Past Clients Over 130 different NKU faculty/staff members, and departments/offices St. Elizabeth Medical Center N. Ky. Center for Educator Excellence Kentucky Center for Mathematics Kentucky Humanities Council Baptist Life Communities NKU’s Pathways to Nursing Leadership Scholars Program Summit Hills Country Club U.S. EPA Covington Schools Campbell County Schools Cincinnati Public Schools Kenton County Schools Newport Schools NKU students MSN and DNP students Master-level students in Education, and EdD students Senior Projects – Celebration of Student Research and Creativity

  8. How can the BCC help you with your project? Planning Study Design (and its relationship to analysis) Statistical/Mathematical Analysis Interpretation of Results

  9. Planning Brainstorming Interpreting statistical results found in related studies Revising Research Questions to best utilize statistical methods Determining the type of data that you will need to gather or collect Determining how you will gather or collect that data Existing Data (e.g., chart review) Survey Pre/Post Assessment Experiment

  10. (Statistical) Study Design • Determining what variables need to be measured/recorded • Determining appropriate data collection instruments • Survey design • Experimental design • Determining sample size requirements (power analysis) • Establishing a timeline of data collection • Assist in developing and writing an evaluation plan

  11. Data Management and Analyses • Help you to organize and manage your data (spreadsheets, etc.) • Answer questions regarding the use of statistical/mathematical software • Conduct analyses • Produce graphs, tables, etc.

  12. Interpretation of Results • Provide written summaries of the statistical analyses • Meet to discuss the results and how they may apply to the client’s field

  13. Common Statistical Analyses • Investigating a single variable… • Categorical data: • Frequency Table (counts and percentages) • Bar Graph • Confidence Interval for a Population Proportion • Quantitative data: • Summary statistics (mean, median, standard deviation, etc.) • Graphs: Histogram, Boxplot, Dotplot • Confidence Interval for a Population Mean

  14. Common Statistical Analyses • Comparing Two Groups with Quantitative Data… • Summary Statistics and Graphs • Two-Sample t-test • Paired t-test • Nonparametric Statistics: • Mann-Whitney Test • Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test

  15. Common Statistical Analyses • Comparing Three or More Groups with Quantitative Data… • Summary Statistics and Graphs • Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) • Repeated Measures ANOVA • Multiple Comparisons • Nonparametric Statistics: Kruskal-Wallis Test

  16. Common Statistical Analyses • Investigating Relationships… • Categorical Variables: • Cross-tabulations and Bar Graphs • Chi-Square Test or Fisher’s Exact Test • Quantitative Variables: • Correlation and Scatterplot • Linear Regression • Other Relationships… • Multiple Regression (2 or more predictor variables) • Logistic Regression (modeling/predicting a binary response) • Ordinal Regression (modeling/predicting an ordinal response)

  17. How Much do we Charge for our Services? Meetings and/or analyses that can be completed in three hours or less areoffered at no charge. The fee for additional services (over and above the initial three hours) will be $40 per hour. An estimate of the time required can be provided following the initial meeting. Writing a Grant Proposal? Consider including BCC for assistance with the statistical analysis?

  18. How to Request our Assistance By appointment only… Visit our website, click on “Request our Services”, and fill out the online request form: www.nku.edu/~bcc Send us an e-mail: bcc@nku.edu Call us: 859-572-1325
