  1. Polar Classroom Justina Caldwell FHS 2620 Spring Semester 2012

  2. TRANSPORTATION • This semester in the Polar Classroom the main focus was on anything transportation. (vehicles, people who drove them, etc.)

  3. Talking about immediate experiences The children are interested in talking immediate experiences or a familiar story. With this picture Coen had found a worm outside. He wanted to make sure that everyone saw the worm. Coen talked about how he saw the worm hurt and thought it needed to come inside.

  4. Negotiating play When using teacher support the children can use words to help negotiate play. In this situation the children were pretending to be on a train. Ethan shared with me that he wanted to use the hole punch and was upset. I told him to try asking Miley that when she was done if he could have a turn. He then used my exact words and Miley told him, “Oh sure Ethan,” smiled, and then handed it over.

  5. Story telling The children have fun retelling the story the read afterwards. In this picture I had just finished reading Jack and the Bean Stalk with the kids and Presley went around going, “Fee FiFo Fun,” and stepping as big as she could.

  6. Dramatic Play When you play with the children you can see into what they think. In this picture Presley and I were on a train ride. When asked what she saw outside the train she went to the class window and said, “The dinosaur museum. There’s a t-rex, and a triceratops.” Lexi and Ariyah took me on a plane ride. They took me to the store and the zoo. Whenever we would get somewhere they would lead me to the classroom door and we would look out. They would then tell me what they could “See.”

  7. Word sounds with letter shapes When you ask the children about the letters “A, B, and C” they can tell you what letter they are and what sound they make. In this picture I was asking Desmond questions. Justina: What letter is this? Desmond: F Justina: What sound does it make? Desmond: FFff, for fun. Justina: Is there something in the room that starts with that letter? Desmond: (points at the block area) They look like they’re having fun.

  8. Shows pride in doing things If they can do it, or think they can do it, they will let you know. In this picture it shows an activity where they were using straws to blow paint around the paper. Each child wanted to squeeze out their own paint. Lexi: Let me do it!

  9. Long interaction in small group activities Children are constantly moving and wanting to experience what is in their environment. Lexi sat for twenty minutes taking fish that had letters on them and matching them with the alphabet mats.

  10. Longer interaction The Polars were all sitting and singing an all time favorite story of theirs, “Miss Mary Mac.” I’ve seen them sing it over three times. Each time they remember more of the story.

  11. Imitation of others If children see another child having fun, they will copy and want to do what they are doing. Tyler one class decided that he wanted to tie a string to a car because it was sick so he could tow it. The boys watched him and then all came up to me and asked for strings so they could be tow trucks too.

  12. Using art materials for intended use When given any art material, the Polars know what it is used for and will use it for it’s intended purpose. Ethan here is pinching the brush, instead of using his whole fist.

  13. Touches/counts number of objects Everyone in the class can count and touch in increasing numbers any named object. Sean here is counting home many red jelly beans that he had in his bowl.

  14. Runs with longer strides Any chance the Polars get, you can see them running outside. Nura is it for “Duck, Duck, Goose.” They can run far and with big strides.

  15. Cutting paper When given the chance to use scissors the class doesn’t have problems when using them. Right here Dante is cutting a square for me.

  16. Assists with simple chores When asked to help with simple chores, the children are able to do so. Lexi here is using a broom and dust pan to sweep up beans that had fallen onto the floor.

  17. Tolerates and uses textured materials The Polars are interested in using different textured materials. Lexi here is using a stick and flour paint to paint a picture.

  18. Building When given the chance you will see the Polars building. They like to explore how high they can build and how wide they can build.

  19. Problem Solving I have found that the Polars try at any chance to fix problems. Right here Dante couldn’t get the tracks to connect right. I asked him what he could do. He told me that he could put a block underneath it, and so that is what he did.
