Acids & Bases ionise in water Acid in water: HCl(aq) -> H+(aq) + Cl-(aq) Base in water: NaOH(aq)-> Na+(aq) + OH-(aq) This means the ions can then mix together to form other compounds
Acid + Base -> Salt + Water When an acid is mixed with a base, a neutralisation reaction takes place, producing a salt + water. Eg. Chemical equation HCl(aq) + NaOH(aq) -> NaCl(s) + H2O(aq) Word equation: hydrochloric acid + sodium hydroxide -> sodiumchloride + water
