  1. Managing Course Objectives and Content AFMC IRG Education Stream

  2. What is the issue? Ensuring content / topic fit, effectiveness and amount of content within course and curriculum without undue overlap. • What are the enablers / barriers to this issue? • Barrier • Faculty provides objectives, however objectives should come from MD program based on overall objectives of the course- step is reversed from what it should be. • Objectives are not well written and takes a great deal of work to correct this. • Lack of instruction for faculty on what / how to teaching (content, topics, etc.) • Course coordinator’s (aka Faculty Course Leader) role not encompassing identifying overall objectives, looking over course material, determining correct topics and amount of detail, etc.

  3. What are the enablers / barriers continued…..? • Barrier continued…. • Lack of Peer Evaluation to ensure objectives are being met, need to have Course Leader sit in on lectures and observe and provide feedback to lecturer. • Ownership of content topic is unclear, i.e. UTI: nephrology and infectious disease specialists overlap • Enabler • Curriculum specialist who looks at each course and maps objectives to each course. • Run faculty retreat with faculty and provide all topics covered in each course; faculty would see what topics were already covered in courses outside of theirs and / or identify missing topics

  4. What are the short-term goals? • Curriculum mapping/course content review must occur • Set objectives for each course determined by the Course Leader and given to each lecturer or Run group retreat where all faculty come together and collaborate to provide input into how the curriculum is structured, with theoverall content and objective decisions coming from MD Program • What are the medium- term goals? • Peer Evaluation and Feedback • Faculty Development teaching and learning training mandatory for all faculty (require a minimum amount of faculty development related to teaching and learning)

  5. How can the national IRG work together to solve the problem in an innovative way to enable and demonstrate innovation and leadership in health science professions education? • Bring all Canadian Medical Schools together to create one Curriculum Map for the MD Program’s across Canada • Each school applies their unique program to the objectives, determines which objectives are covered in specific courses / environments (Large Class Lecture, PBL, TBL, etc)
