  2. Welcome to NRS 220 • This course addresses the concepts of metabolism and cell growth. Alterations in endocrine function, digestion, absorption, bowel elimination and cell growth are examined. The students will be in selected area health care facilities for their clinical experiences. • Course material will be posted on MercerOnline, please contact the Virtual College if you are unable to access it.

  4. Medical Clearance • All medical clearance forms were to be handed in to the nursing office/Stephanie Horner by August 9th. Students handing in these forms past that date must have a clearance form from the nursing office/Stephanie Horner in order to attend class. • Should the student not submit the required documentation, the student will be counted as absent each day until submitted. • If required documentation is not turned in, dismissal from the nursing program may occur.

  5. Course Outline • The course outline and lab manual are posted on the nursing website. All course material will be found in MercerOnline. Please read it through.

  7. Theory Class • Theory class will be on Tuesdays in LA 226 from 9 Am – 12 Noon. Please be sure to prepare by reading prior to class time.

  8. College Lab • Review the college lab manual and the weekly objectives. A math portion will be a part of the lab activity each week. • The lab instructor on Friday morning will be J. Aprigliano. The Friday afternoon lab instructor will be B. Kunkel.

  9. Testing • Quizzes will be given at the beginning of class at weeks 1, 2, 4, and 5. • The midterm will be at the beginning of class at week 3 and the final will be scheduled during the week after week 5 lecture. Please see test dates. • A HESI medical surgical exam will be given at the end of the semester after all scheduled classes (either NRS 220, 221, or 222). Please see test dates. If a student does not complete the HESI exam at the assigned test date failure to progress to the next course level will occur.

  10. Policies • Review your all the policies in the handbook, especially for the following: • Academic Integrity • Attendance • Grading • Guidelines for the Use of the College Lab • General Policies Regarding Clinical Experiences • Uniforms/Dress Code

  11. Hospital Orientation • Please check your Mercer email for the clinical facilities paperwork( orientation booklets, post test papers, badge information, confidentiality , etc) • Students will need to complete the clinical orientation paper work and bring the completed forms to clinical orientation. • Students will be responsible for one alternate clinical experience on their own timeby attending a support group meeting. Please see Alternate Clinical Assignment slide for further explanation.

  12. Math Test • A 10 question math test will be given in the hospital orientation. Each student must attain a minimum of 90% prior to dispensing medications in the clinical facility. The math will be based on material previously learned. • If a student does not attain a 90%, the student will be remediated and a retest will occur by the end of the first week.

  13. Clinical Lab- University Medical Center at Princeton • Orientation and computer training will be set up by the clinical faculty. • Monday clinical: Session A at University Medical Center at Princeton will have M. Kelly as the instructor. • Sessions B & C at University Medical Center at Princeton will have V. Kunte as the instructor. • Clinical starts on 8/27 for UMCP group. Bring all your completed forms to orientation (post test, confidentiality, vehicle). Check your emails for further information.

  14. UMCP STUDENTS • Students MUST get their ID Badges from Human Resources(HR) before you start clinical. HR closes at 5 PM HR is located up the driveway across from the hospital’s main entrance.

  15. Clinical Lab-Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital Hamilton • Wednesday clinical with Doreen Carnvale at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital.

  16. Written Project • A written assignment will be due at week 4. It will be a revised version of a concept map with a written component. Please see the course outline for the guidelines.

  17. Alternate Clinical Assignment • Students will be responsible to attend a support group meeting on their own time within the first 4 weeks of the course. The support group must be one that is related to an alteration of cellular regulation. Please review the course outline to see a list of the exemplars. • Students will hand in a written paper based on their observational experience by the end of week 4. A guideline for the experience will be provided. • The various clinical facilities hold support group meetings as well as the different societies (i.e. American Cancer Society). Please check the websites.

  18. Testing Dates • Midterm and Final Exams: • All final exams in room MS 215 starting at 9 AM Session 1-Midterm: Tuesday, September 11, 2012 Final: Friday, September 28, 2012 Session 2-Midterm: Tuesday, October 16, 2012 Final: Friday, November 2, 2012 Session 3-Midterm: Tuesday, November 27, 2012 Final: Friday, December 14, 2012 HESI exam will be on December 17, 2012 from 9 AM to 12 Noon in rooms LA 215 & 218.

We will be using the MercerOnline/mercer e-mail for e-mail correspondences . • All the faculty are here to help you succeed. • We also would like a volunteer to be a representative from the class to attend curriculum committee meetings once a month from 2/2:30pm – 3/3:30pm. Please consider being a representative.
