  1. Review of literature: searching for documents and reports related to the topic.

  2. Review of literature • The process of documenting related materials is referred to as the review of literature.

  3. Goals of Literature Review? 1.a. To put the topic within a scientific perspective. 1.b. To help formulate a better question (deleting or adding a factor).

  4. review of literature 2.a. To avoid mere duplication 2.b. To find new unexplained items. 3. To avoid inadequacies of previous research (e.g., the proficiency test was not standard).

  5. Goals of Literature Review • The goals of literature review are to: 1) help researchers put the topic within a scientific perspective. 2) avoid mere duplication of previous research. 3) avoid inadequacies of previous research.

  6. Selectivity in reading is definitely required because it is just physically impossible to exhaust the literature. Therefore, researchers should decide on what to read and how to get most out of what they read.

  7. Most researchers agree that the focus of literature review should be on three areas of theory, method, and data analysis (result)of previous research.

  8. The foundation of research is a theory from which hypotheses are generated. In fact, research which is not based on a solid theory may not lead to fruitful rules.

  9. The second area of relevant information a researcher should seek is the method section of the previous research.

  10. The method section includes information about the subjects, the instruments of data collection, the procedures employed in data collection, the kind, method, and design of research, and the statistical analyses used in the research.

  11. Finding the sources of information • The researchers should know the procedures to find and examine the relevant sources. Depending on the familiarity of the researcher with the topic, various procedures can be followed.

  12. If the researcher is not familiar with the topic, probably an appropriate technique to start literature review is to refer to an encyclopedia.

  13. Encyclopedias are used to check for factual information to get an overview of the topic. Encyclopedias provide an acceptable bibliographical information which a researcher can start an in-depth search.

  14. A researcher who is familiar with the topic might go straight to more specialized references. In such cases, probably the most informative source of information is the citation of abstracts.

  15. Another source of information for the researchers familiar with the topic of investigation is reference books and articles.

  16. Due to abundance of materials, the researcher should concentrate on some key authors, key topics, and key studies.

  17. Dictionaries, almanacs, year books, educational handbooks, statistical information published by different organizations, directories, governmental publications, book lists, book reviews, and periodicals are well-known sources of information for researchers.

  18. One more source of information is the Educational ResourceInformation Center, abbreviated as ERIC, and established in1964. Ever since, almost all articles and books have been stored in computerized forms in this organization.

  19. A. How comprehensive should it be? B. How many sources? C. What kind of sources? D. Where to find sources? E. How to read?

  20. review of literature (Review) The focus of literature review should be on theory, method and data analysis of the previous research. Theory is the foundation of all research.

  21. review of literature Method includes (1) subjects, (2) the instruments to collect data, (3) the procedures, (4) kind, method and design of research and (5) statistical analysis.

  22. review of literature • Statistical analysis includes the presentation and interpretation of results 9section four).

  23. review of literature Finding the source of information: A. Encyclopedia B. Abstracts C. Books and articles D. Dictionaries, yearbooks, journals

  24. review of literature Periodicals in TEFL: (1) Language Learning (2) TESOL Quarterly (3) Modern Language Journal (4)Language Teaching Journal (5) Linguistics

  25. review of literature (6) Applied Linguistics (7) International Review of Applied Linguistics (8) Language (9) Language Testing (10) Language Acquisition

  26. review of literature When recording bibliographical information, try to include: • Full name of the author • Full title of the document • Place, publisher, date 4. Pages

  27. review of literature When taking notes, take care: 1. Do not copy 2. Do not ignore unimportant notes 3. Keep them in an organized way 4. Collect comprehensive notes
