  1. Checking out Prompts: Tricks to passing the TASP • “Always bear in mind that your own resolution to success is more important than any other one thing.” • Abraham Lincoln (1809 - 1865)

  2. What is a prompt? • A prompt is a paragraph that contains the information which you need to write your essay in four parts: • Part one: The question • Part two: One side of an argument • Part three: The opposing side of an argument • Part four: Directions

  3. Sample Prompt: • Children killing children is all too common today. More often than not, a handgun is used as a weapon. Should guns be made illegal? Some people believe that we should make guns illegal because they feel that the number of accidental shootings would decrease, the streets would be safer, and people would be less likely to harm loved ones in moments of anger. Other people believe that making guns illegal would infringe on citizens’ rights to bear arms, leave innocent people no means of protecting themselves and their property, and allow crime to increase since only the criminals would find ways to get the guns. Write an essay of 350-500 words for an academic audience in which you take a position on the preceding issue. Support your position with logical arguments and appropriate examples. • (Read this and see if you can distinguish the four parts.)

  6. The following are some prompts you might want to look at just to get more familiar with them.

  7. Sample Prompt • Recently, as the US continues to grow, residents of the Northern Rio Grande Valley have been considering whether or not the many cities in the area should combine to create one metropolis. Should valley towns from Mission to Harlingen combine into one large metropolis? Those who think that the valley cities should combine to create one metropolis believe it would be wise because it would create a sense of unity for valley residents, provide an opportunity for economic advancement in the national market, and offer valleyresidents lower taxes. Those who disagree believe that creating a metropolis would take away valley identity, most jobs for city employees and would create other problems such as violence and theft that larger cities must deal with.Your purpose is to write an essay of 350-500 words, to a classroom instructor, arguing whether the Rio Grande Valley should or should not combine to create one large metropolis. Use logical reasoning and specific examples.

  8. Sample Prompt • Being able to strike for better wages and a better work environment has been a hot issue in our society. Should government employees such as police officers and fire fighters have the right to strike?Proponents say that everyone who works in our society has the right to strike for better wages and working conditions. Over the last one hundred years, major strides have been achieved in the work place because of this right. It does not matter what kind of job a person has, he \she has the right to protest unfair conditions.Opponents argue that some jobs such as the police or fire fighters are service jobs. Without these people doing their jobs, society would be in chaos or danger. Because of the type of jobsthey do, they are not able to strike without putting the rest of us in danger. Write a persuasive essay of 350-500 words, to be read by a classroom instructor. Your purpose is to argue whether or not government employees should have the right to strike. Use logical reasoning and appropriate examples.
