  1. EMIS: An Environmental Marine Information System JRC - IES

  2. Rational • The purpose of the Environmental Marine Information System (EMIS) web site is to enhance the understanding of particular marine phenomenon (eutrophication) by providing information derived from research. • This GIS enabled web site will allow the user to obtain detailed spatial and temporal information for the European regional seas on: • indices on eutrophication sensitivity and oxygen depletion • risk • physical variables (mainly generated by numerical models) • biological variables (derived from satellite remote sensing)

  3. Eutrophication Indicators PSA (Physically Sensitive Areas to Eutrophication) : The aim of the PSA is to assess the effect of the physical environment on the production and assimilation of the organic matter for shallow marine ecosystems. It is assuming that the nutrient distribution is homogeneous and provides a measure of the physical resistance to eutrophication provoked oxygen deficiency. OXYRISK (Oxygen Depletion Risk) : It characterizes the most probable occurrence of oxygen deficiency at the bottom in shallow sea areas due to the degradation of organic matter.

  4. PSA = Physically Sensitive Areas to eutrophication 3D hydro-dynamical modelling Supporting factors Bottom layer physics Surface layer physics Effect Impact Pressure High primary production High nutrient concentration Oxygen deficiency Hypoxia Risk Remote sensing of Ocean Colour • PSA and OXYRISK computation

  6. Data description - 1 • Satellite derived products (biological-physical) • Chl-a : SeaWiFS (JRC atm. corr., OC4) • PAR : JRC algo (NCEP,TOMS,SeaWiFS) • PP : JRC algo (Chl-a from SeaWiFS) • K490 : SeaWiFS • SST : AVHRR • Numerical model data • Different models over 9 basins (JRC, IFREMER, Un. Athens, HIDROMOD) • Spatial resolution (grid) : 3.8 and 6.0 km • Variables: e.g. Bathymetry,Mixed Layer Depth, Salinity and Temp. • Maximum Density Gradient

  11. Next Developments • Update and maintain the datasets. • PSA, OXYRISK are now derived from monthly • averaged model data : exploit inter-annual variability • Add new features (2008).
