  2. Kumarakom had become very famous in 2001 when the then Prime Minister of our country chose it for his annual vacation. The tranquil surroundings moved him so much that he penned down his thoughts and shared it with the nation as Musings from Kumarakom. But apart from that, Kumarakom has been popular as one of the most attractive tourist destinations in Kerala. At the centre of this tourist attraction is the huge Vembanad lake. It is the largest lake in Kerala. It is a magnet for birds of a large number of species, and every year it plays host to a large number of migratory birds as well. A major attraction at Kumarakom is the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary which is home to many species of birds. It is spread over 14 acres. But the main attraction for tourists who come to Kumarakom are the extended backwaters which are very popular for boating and fishing.

  3. The annual boat race on the backwaters is a well-known attraction of the backwaters around Kumarakom. These races are held between teams rowing the long Snake Boats which can hold a large number of oarsmen at a time. Apart from the lake and the bird sanctuary, tourists can also visit the Aruvikkuzhi waterfall and the Bay Island Drift Museum. The nearest city is Kottayam, which is just 16 kilometers away and accessible by both rail and road. Locals also use the backwaters for inland travel come to Kumarakom from Alleppey (Alappuzha) on the opposite bank. But international and many domestic tourists prefer to fly in to Cochin and then drive the 80 kilometers to Kumarakom.
