  1. THE PLUS AND MINUS OF EYESIGHT Aarti Pandya

  2. UNDERSTANDING PLUS AND MINUS EYESIGHT: Plus and minus eyesight, also known as hyperopia and myopia, are refractive errors that affect eye focus. Hyperopia occurs when the eyeball is too short or the cornea is too flat, causing difficulty focusing on nearby objects. On the other hand, myopia occurs when the eyeball is too long or the cornea is too steep, causing distant objects to appear blurry.

  3. Causes and Risk Factors: Eyesight can be influenced by various factors, including genetics, environmental factors, and near work. Hyperopia is caused by shorter eyeballs or flatter corneas, while myopia is influenced by genetic and environmental factors. Excessive near work, prolonged reading, and lack of outdoor activities increase the risk of developing myopia.

  4. SYMPTOMS AND DIAGNOSIS: Plus and minus eyesight symptoms vary, with hyperopia causing eyestrain, headaches, and difficulty focusing, and nearsightedness causing distant objects. Comprehensive eye exams are essential for diagnosing refractive errors, using tests like visual acuity measurements and refraction assessments.

  5. TREATMENT AND MANAGEMENT: Eyesight can be managed effectively using prescription glasses or contact lenses for hyperopia, and vision correction surgeries like LASIK or PRK for myopia. Orthokeratology, a non-surgical treatment using specially designed contact lenses, has shown promising results in slowing down myopia progression in children.

  6. PREVENTION AND TIPS: To promote good eye health, engage in regular eye exercises, maintain a balanced diet, take breaks from work, and spend time outdoors. Regular eye check-ups, especially for children, are crucial for early detection and intervention, reducing the risk of refractive errors.
