  1. Eros = physical/romantic The 3 Types of Love Philos = mental/friendship Love is made up of the three fundamental elements of man: physical, mental and spiritual. Agape = spiritual/unconditional

  2. Eroslove - known as "erotic love“ (not that kind of “erotic” – sheesh!) • Strong emotional feelings toward another, though they know very little about each other. • Usually occurs in the beginning of a “romantic" relationship. • Based more on physical traits. • With "true love," people must know and accept each other’s good and bad traits. • It is love that is untested by hardships, and may or may not last.

  3. 5 Components of Romantic Love • the belief that love conquers all; • the belief that each person has only one true love; • the expectation that the beloved will live up to the ideals of the lover; • love at first sight is possible; and • it is better to follow your heart than your head when choosing a partner.Knee (1998)

  4. Philoslove - based on friendship • Friendship is the foundation of a successful relationship. • Usually lasts long-term. • Advantage: get to know each other, before getting more serious. • Start out as friends, then admire each other, then strong emotions can appear. • Based on "give-and-take", where two people benefit each other in a mutual way.

  5. Agape - Unconditional Love • Highest type of love • Totally selfless, where a person shows love to another person even if this act does not benefit her/him in any way. Whether the love given is returned or not, the person continues to love. • Examples: You help a person, even though they hate you. You take care of a parent who has a stroke or Alzheimer’s.Your spouse yells at you, but you don’t yell back. You disobey your parents over and over again, but they still love and care for you. This NEVER happens, right?
