  1. Whose Is It Anyway? What is Plagiarism?

  2. When you create a project for class, how do you let people know that it’s yours? Write your name on it. by Ruth Moore

  3. What if someone else put their name on your project and turned it in to the teacher? • Did they do any work on your project? • Who would get credit for doing the project? • Would they deserve a grade on the project? • Would it be fair for them to get a grade? • Would you be upset? • Would you feel cheated?

  4. Plagiarism is… Using some or all of somebody’s work or idea, and saying that you created it. • It includes copying and pasting text, images, video, or anything else someone else has created, without giving credit • It is cheating • It’s against school rules • It’s illegal

  5. If a teacher asks you to write a report, she expects you not to copy others’ work, whether it’s from a webpage, or a friend.Even if you copy something into your own handwriting or retype it yourself, it’s still plagiarism.

  6. Why is it important not to plagiarize? • So that you can show respect for work and ideas that others create Respect is a way of showing that you admire and value something. • Using someone else’s work means that you think it is valuable

  7. How do you show respect? • Give credit when using other people’s work by providing a citation A citationis a note of credit to the author The list of all the credits is called a bibliography

  8. It is okay to use someone else’s words or ideas if you cite it! There are 2 ways to use others’ information: • Put the information into your own words and cite it • Use the author’s exact words, put it in quotation marks, and cite it
