  1. L.T.: I can use a protractor to create pie charts of molecular formulas and determine the angle of molecular bonds. Converting Percentages to Degrees Step 1: Take the percentage • Ex. 75% Step 2: Divide the percentage by 100 • 75 / 100 = .75 Step 3: Multiply the decimial by 360 (360 degrees in a full circle – a full circle is 100%) • .75 x 360 = 270 degrees

  2. L.T.: I can use a protractor to create pie charts of molecular formulas and determine the angle of molecular bonds. The human body roughly contains (by volume) 65% oxygen, 18% carbon, 10% hydrogen, and 7% other. Use a protractor and draw a pie chart representing this information. Oxygen: 65% Carbon: 18% Hydrogen: 10% Other: 7% 234o 65o 36o 25o

  3. Inquiry: How can I measure out molecular angles using a protractor? USING THE LAPTOPS 1) THERE IS NO FOOD OR DRINKS NEAR THE LAPTOPS 2) Laptops are not for personal use! 3) You must ONLY work on the laptop assigned to you. 4) You are to ONLY go on the sites assigned by the teacher 5) Keep the computer away from the tables edge 6) Treat the laptop with care -> they are brand new! DO NOT write, scratch, or peel the material labels off the laptop!! Anyone unable to follow the rules will no longer be allowed laptop use for the rest of the semester, marked as cutting, and will be given an automatic detention.

  4. Inquiry: How can I measure out molecular angles using a protractor? DO NOT TOUCH THE LAPTOPS UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO!!!

  5. Inquiry: How can I measure out molecular angles using a protractor? MOLECULAR ANGLES Directions: Step 1: Go to the website http://phet.colorado.edu/en/simulation/molecule-shapes Step 2: Click “Run Now” Step 3: Once the program is open, click the “Real Molecule” tab Step 4: In the top right corner look for the section called “Options” Step 5: Check the “Show Bond Angles” box and UnCheck the “Show Lone Pairs” box Step 6: Now look for the dropdown and click the box that is called “Molecule” to see the different molecular formulas YOUR TASK: Draw the molecules H2O, CO2, SO2, XeF2, BF3, CIF3, XeF4. Make sure that the angles of the molecules are accurate. Use your PROTRACTOR!
