  1. What Can Happen To Kids When Your Balcony Isn’t Protected?

  2. Failing to properly secure your balcony – even if it’s only a lower level balcony without a significant drop the other side – can pose a serious threat to small children, and even small animals. A balcony that is more than a metre above ground level, should always have a balustrade (otherwise known as a railing) surrounding it, and these are often made from metal, glass or timber. Without this in place, and without an appropriate balustrade being used, the following accidents can easily happen to children:

  3. Becoming trapped – it’s not unheard of for curious kids to get their heads, arms or legs trapped in the opening between the railings surrounding a balcony. Depending on how stuck they are, this can be very painful, and if not discovered and freed quickly, can lead to further, more serious injuries. Falling – babies and toddlers can easily fall through the openings of a balustrade if the gaps aren’t narrow enough, and whatever height the balcony is from the ground, this can be fatal. As can the fall should a small child manage to climb over the top of a balustrade. Any objects that can be used to climb up and onto the balcony’s edge, should be removed or at the very least, placed a long way from the balustrade and be heavy enough so that a child can’t drag them. ● ●

  4. Additionally, kids may trip up as they make their way out onto the balcony. Are balcony accidents such as these common? While balcony accidents in which a baby or child receives injuries that require hospital treatment can’t be described as a common occurrence, they almost certainly do happen, and in most instances, are entirely preventable.

  5. One highly effective and affordable method of securing your balcony and making it impossible for a child to hurt themselves by falling through or over a balustrade, is safety netting. Talk to a local company about how they can carry out an assessment of your balcony, and fasten breathable netting across the balustrade to make the entire space safe for kids and pets to use, even when unsupervised (although leaving kids and pets unsupervised on a balcony is never recommended).

  6. Remember the following when securing your balcony: Safety netting ● Simple but so effective, safety netting can give you the peace of mind you need when your kids and/or pets are using the balcony. Balustrades/railings should be high enough ● Ideally, railings should be at a height of at least 1 metre, with the vertical bars being no more than 12.5 cm’s apart.

  7. Balustrades/railings shouldn’t have large gaps ● Ideally, a balcony balustrade shouldn’t have any horizontal elements that make it possible for a child to climb up onto them. Remove objects from the balustrade area ● From furniture and pot plants, to any other item that can be used to help small children climb up onto the edge of the balcony, these should never be placed near to the balustrade, and if they can be moved and used by a small child, they shouldn’t be out there at all.

  8. Check the balustrade often ● Regular checks of your balustrade and the balcony as a whole, can help you spot any places in which damage has made them potentially dangerous. Don’t let the unthinkable happen to your kids when they’re playing on your balcony, by securing the entire space and having safety netting professionally installed.
