SECOND GRADE 2013-2014 Nine Week Plans- First Quarter • MATH • SOLS– 2.1, 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.12, 2.13, 2.14, 2.16, 2.17, • Units of Study: • - telling time, calendar & temperature • - data & graphing • - addition and subtraction facts to 18 • - fact families • - skip counting by 2, 5, and 10 and backwards by 10 • - ordinal positions 1st-20th and odd/even numbers • - patterns • SOCIAL STUDIES • SOLS – 2.2, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.10, 2.11, 2.12 • Units of Study: • -characteristics and examples of a good citizen • -models of good citizenship, including: George Washington, Abraham • Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., Susan B. Anthony, Jackie Robinson • & Helen Keller • civic behaviors and responsibilities • - geography & map skills • SCIENCE • SOLS– 2.1, 2.4, 2.5 • Units of Study: • - discovering science concepts through scientific investigation • living systems • life processes • HEALTH • SOLS-2.1, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5 • Units of Study • -define and understand personal strengths and weaknesses, heredity, • and self-image • -develop strategies for dealing with feelings READING & LANGUAGE ARTS SOLS – 2.5a,b, 2.7b, 2.8a,b,c Description of Units of Study -use meaning cues and language structure when reading - use information in the story to read words -use knowledge of sentence structure when reading -read fiction and nonfiction, using a variety of strategies independently -read and demonstrate comprehension of fiction and nonfiction -make predictions, read to confirm predictions, and relate previous experiences to the topic WRITTEN LANGUAGE SOLS – 2.11a, 2.12a Description of Units of Study Writing -use capital letters in names, “I” in and at the beginning of a sentence -edit for end punctuation, complete sentences, grammar and spelling -write creatively using phonetic spelling -generate ideas for writing stories, letters and explanations Word Study -compare and contrast categories of word features -sort a list of words using spelling patterns D’Nealian Handwriting: -write numerals and upper and lower case manuscript letters correctly -use proper slant, size and spacing -demonstrate correct posture and grip -demonstrate a willingness and ability to produce legible writing ORAL LANGUAGE SOLS- 2.1a,b, 2.2a,b, 2.3b,c Description of Units of Study -create oral stories to share with others -expand listening and speaking vocabularies -share stories or information orally with an audience -participate as a contributor and leader in a group Little River Elementary School
