  1. How Much Time Do We Have Left? The Coal Wars -- the Fight of ALL Life

  2. How Far Can We Go? • 20 Years ago NASA Scientist Dr. James Hansen testified before Congress that the Globe was warming and that people were the cause. • Top scientist worked to calculate the CO2

  3. CO2 Parts Per Million • 550 ppm – first extreme upper guess • 450 ppm – first estimate • Currently at 383 ppm • Greenland • Himalayas

  4. Hansen’s New Ceiling 350 ppm

  5. Where we are heading • Studies at the bottom of the ocean have revealed that when the last Ice Age occurred 35 million years ago, the earth was at 450 ppm. • Hansen says that is we reach and stay at 450 ppm, it is likely to melt all ice and sea levels will rise by 75 meters (more than 246 feet).

  6. Hansen • Dr. Hansen said that the earth’s climate is approaching a critical tipping point that, if passes, would lead to “practically a different planet” which for Texas would mean a permanent dust-bowl.

  7. The Concern about the Economy • What Non-Attainment means for Commerce • What renewable energy conversion means for jobs • What health means for productivity

  8. What is happening in our backyard? • Dynegy Sandy Creek Coal Plant • In Riesel – 12 miles from Waco and emissions will blow toward Waco most of the time • Oak Grove – TXU • 50 miles south of Waco – will be among the dirtiest in the Nation, if not the dirtiest • Fairfield Plant

  9. How Can You Help? • Call your U.S. Representative and urge him/her to co-sponsor the Safe Climate Act to require nationwide reductions of global warming pollution. You can reach your Representative by calling 202-224-3121. If you don't know who your Representative is, that's OK. Just tell the operator your zip code, and they will connect you to the right office.

  10. How Can You Help? • Call State Representatives • Call Local Representative • Write Letters to the Editor • Speak Out – Loudly and Clearly • Call Dynegy and TXU and Express your Feelings • Buy Green Energy: www.powertochoose.com

  11. How Can You Help? • Join Environmental Organizations • TPOWER • Public Citizen • Environment Texas • SEED Coalition • Sierra Club • Prepare you church to be a Disaster Relief Shelter

  12. How Can You Help? • Unseat representatives who do not adequately protect the environment and then run new candidates who will. • Conserve, recycle, use energy efficient products, native plants, build green, build windmills, plant gardens, buy local, share rides, walk • But most of all, ACT and ACT now.

  13. First and Fast • Hansen says that the first thing we must do to change the climate is to IMMEDIATELY halt the building of any new coal plants anywhere on this planet. • We know that China is opening at least one new coal plant per week

  14. Hansen said in 2006: • We have at most 10 years – not 10 years to decide upon action, but 10 years to alter fundamentally the trajectory of global greenhouse emissions. Note: In 2008 – this is now 8 years

  15. If ever there was a time for Global Revolution – It is now. We have less than a decade to turn things around. Let’s do it!
