  1. What Is Smokeless Tobacco? Smokeless tobacco is basically what it says, it's a way of using tobacco without smoking it. This usually includes sniffing, chewing or placing it between the cheek and gum. Smokeless tobacco comes in a variety of forms, including snuff, chewing tobacco and dissolvable tobacco. It does contain nicotine and therefore is as addictive as smoking tobacco. Smokeless tobacco is lower on risk than combustible products, but the risk varies with each product class. It is believed that smokeless tobacco risk is the same or similar to an electronic cigarette. Smokeless tobacco increases the risk of oral cancer, dental disease, esophagus cancer, reproductive problems, including still birth and pancreatic cancers. As with any tobacco product it contains dangerous chemicals, with twenty eight chemicals present with nitrosamine the most commonly used. This type of tobacco product is used throughout the world and once addicted, most people progress to smoking cigarettes. In fact males are more likely to have used smokeless tobacco in their past than females. The most common types of smokeless tobaccos include dipping tobacco, which is placed between the lip and gums and chewing tobacco, that is chewed and then spat out. Snuff is inhaled into the nasal cavity and then there is tobacco gum, which is chewed and contains tobacco and nicotine. The nicotine levels vary depending on the type of product you use and the amount of tobacco in the particular product. Each one has their own levels of nicotine. It is estimated that there are approximately three hundred million people in the world that use smokeless tobacco with a long history of use in North America, Asia and Pakistan. It is estimated that more than three percent of people aged twelve and above use smokeless tobacco. Two in every one hundred middle school children in the United States use this type of tobacco with six in every one hundred high school students in the United States making use of smokeless tobacco on a regular basis. The World Health Organization claims that this type of tobacco is a significant part of the world tobacco problem with it considered a health risk, as with any other tobacco product. It is also considered less hazardous than smoking, depending on the product used. In order to stop using smoking tobacco, people have to go through smoking cessation the same as they would if they smoked the product. It is not recognized as a way to quit smoking. Smokeless tobacco does vary throughout the world. The most hazardous smokeless tobacco comes from Asia, while the less hazardous products come from Sweden. This will vary in the adverse side effects they provide, such as dental disease and oral cancers. Smoking tobacco has declined throughout the world with smokeless products and electronic cigarettes being adopted as a way to stop smoking cigarettes and eventually

  2. quit smoking altogether. Many believe that chewing or sniffing tobacco is a healthier alternative to smoking. Regular smokers are at a higher risk of developing cardiovascular disease and changing to smokeless tobacco could potentially be a way to reduce their risk, based on a study by UCLA. The findings identified that smokers had an increased risk due to the chemicals in tobacco smoke. Cigarettes and smokeless tobaccos both contain nicotine, but they do not have the same chemical components. The study showed that while both smoking and smokeless tobaccos have high nicotine levels, those using smokeless tobacco had lower concentrations of inflammation and oxidative stress. Those using smokeless tobacco had similar levels of biomarkers found in those that have never smoked a cigarette before.
