  11. Pumping Technology Updates 12% of irrigation development in Ethiopia was irrigated by pumping systems ranging from manually operated treadle pumps to diesel and very few solar water pumps from both groundwater and lake-based irrigation schemes (G.T. Berhe et al. 2022) In Ethiopia over 200,000ha were irrigated by diesel pump which demands an operation cost of 50M USD every year. More than 450,000 of Diesel water pumps are distributed with an average operation cost of 350 USD/ha/Season/Solar Pump review GIZ 2019/. MoA reported that in 2012 E.C ( Small Pump implementation strategy)

  12. Solar Potentials in Ethiopia https://power.larc.nasa.gov/beta/data-access-viewer/ and https://globalsolaratlas.info/map Sunlight Energy Radiation Potential The semi-arid and desert areas in the eastern part and the northern-central part of Ethiopia have the highest radiation intensity The highest is 6.5-7.5 kWh/m2/day, and the other ranges between 4.5-6.0 kWh/m2/day. Ethiopia has an annual total solar energy reserve of 2.199 “Million Terawatt-hours per annum”.

  16. Strategic Financing, Intervention & Approaches • Points of Sale - Distribution Channels • Sales agent network • Bundle with other agent networks ie. Kidame Mart, Hidasse Telecom agents • Individuals ie. TVET grads • Last mile retailers • Hello Solar / Bel Cash retailers • Total gas stations • ZemedeMulatu, a solar kiosk operator in Butajira • Garages, hardware, electrical, electronics • Government-led groups • ATA farm service centers • Agricultural Equipment & Technical Service Enterprise (AETE) • Ethiopian Trading Enterprise (ETE) wholesale outlets • Mechanization Service Centers (MSC) • MoA diesel pump distribution channels for HH irrigation tech promotion/dissemination • Regional governments formed groups to provide distribution and maintenance services that solar companies with MOUs can use as a distribution channel  Strategic partnerships – access cluster of irrigated farming customers while reducing risks • FLID Approach • PPP Linkages and Cost sharing • Creating Modalities to a different range of Subsidization • Commercial farm with a grower network– distributing as input or offering to farmers • Could subsidize partial cost or deduct payments, as other inputs on credit • MFIs: DBE Market Development for Renewable Energy & Energy Efficient Products Credit Line • ACSI, DSCI, OCSSCO, Omo have access to forex to import solar pumps • Land certification and review of farmland leasing financing policy review and regulation and MFIs linkages • High quality after-sales service is a major driver of sales –over 50% of last mile distributor customers make purchasing decisions based on word-of-mouth recommendations from friends and neighbors.(Last Mile Distribution: State of the Sector Report)

  17. Solar Financing Options • Solar technology prices have fallen rapidly over the last decade for all types of Grid, off-grid, and Standalone systems.  • Lease Financing (has two options) • Operational lease (or operating lease, usually treated as renting) and • Financial lease (or capital lease, usually treated as a loan. In that case, there is an ownership transfer option at the end of the lease period)
