Their Willowbrook facility alone is said to have emitted more than 254,000 pounds of ethylene oxide into the surrounding areas between 1993 and 2017. Many lawsuits were filed against the facility and Susan Kamuda, one of the plaintiffs bagged more than #300 million compensation.

  2. Sterigenics announces a $408 million settlement to wind up 870 lawsuits. What led them to face lawsuits? Their Willowbrook facility exposed residents to harmful ethylene oxide emission

  3. Sterigenics International is a company that sterilizes medical devices, food products and pharmaceutical products. • They have around 50 facilities in 13 countries worldwide.

  4. In Willowbrook, Sterigenics releases ethylene oxide (EtO) into 19 sterilization chambers with things to be sterilized. The EtO in the sterilized products was allowed to dissipate into the environment. The facility had around ten EtO leaks during its function from 1984 to until it was closed in 2019.

  5. The EtO exposure causes • Bladder and breast cancers • Lymphocytic leukemia • Myeloma • Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma • Congenital disabilities • Respiratory issues • Neurological ailments

  6. Stop Sterigenics, Facebook group and Citizens 4 Clean Air were formed by some activists to fight against the facility’s EtO emission. • The Willowbrook Sterigenics facility was permanently closed in September 2019

  7. The first class action lawsuit was filed by Attorneys Power Rogers Smith LLP and Korein Tillery LLC on behalf of plaintiffs Julie Cannell, Pamela McGonigal and others. • Susan Kamuda received $363 million in compensation in September 2022. • Teresa Fornek lost her case gainst the facility in November 2022.
