What Causes Dehydration After Bariatric Surgery? Dehydration after bariatric surgery is a serious problem and is common enough that doctors actively warn against it. Many bariatric surgery patients find it hard to get enough water, and as a result, they end up experiencing signs of dehydration and surgery. In this article, you will learn the signs and symptoms of dehydration after bariatric surgery.
Decreased Stomach Volume Bariatric surgery shrinks the stomach down to a fraction of its previous volume. As a result, patients find it much more difficult to drink as much water as they used to. You might feel nauseous when you try to drink water, discouraging you from doing so.
Watery Bowel Movements Although diarrhea doesn’t happen to everyone, it can be a side effect of the surgery. After bariatric surgery, the patient’s digestive system has been rerouted to the point where it needs to recover. During this recovery process, some foods may not be able to be digested. If the food isn’t rejected outright, it may come out as a watery stool.
Thirst And Dry Mouth The first sign that you may not be adequately hydrated is feeling thirsty or having a dry mouth. Dry mouth can be caused by many different things, but it’s generally relieved by consuming some water.
Darker Urine & Lower Urine Volumes A telltale sign of oncoming dehydration is that your urine will be darker than normal. You also won’t produce nearly as much urine as you used to. If you’re seeing darker urine, it doesn’t mean dehydration has set in, but it does mean that you’re at greater risk.
Dry Skin Or Reduced Skin Turgor If your skin is dry, you might need some hydration. Another common symptom is decreased skin turgor. One test you can perform by yourself is to pinch a small bit of skin on your hand. If it returns to its original position quickly, then you’re likely not dehydrated.
Lightheadedness This symptom is a bit more serious, and if you’re feeling lightheaded you should consume some electrolytes immediately. Lightheadedness in this case is caused by low blood pressure as a result of dehydration. Click here for more info!
