  2. Melasma is a common skin condition that often appears as brown or blue-grey spots. It is also known as a pregnancy mask. Why does melasma occur? Melasmaoccurs due to the following reasons: 1. Overproduction of melanin. 2. Excessive sun exposure or ultraviolet 3. Hormonal fluctuation 4. Uses of birth control peels which hasoestrogen and progesterone 5. Genetics. What are the common areas where melasma usually appears? cheeks, nose, chin, forehead, arms, neck, and back. Exposed area of body in sun can face melasma. Is melasma a common skin condition? It is a common skin condition and usually appears in 50% of pregnant women and around 33% of the population deals with melasma, and it begins between 20 and 40 years of age.
