  1. Blockout Curtains Might be the answer to Your Child not Sleeping When you have a child or baby struggling to sleep at night, and not good at taking naps, it can become very hard to function. You are tired. They are tired. You have tried everyone's suggestions on how to get them to have a better sleep routine but it just is not helping. Have you looked at the curtains or shades you have in their room? Blockout blinds might be the answer to them getting a night of great sleep and having more restful naps in the day. The process of falling asleep Humans have biological clocks or rhythms throughout the day and night. A person's sleepiness connects to their biochemical clock. This links to typical wake-up and sleep times, but also cycles of light and dark. When people surround themselves with darkness they are more likely to stimulate the production of melatonin, this is a chemical that triggers that feeling of being sleepy. Artificial lighting or natural light in a room confuses the biological clock, can affect the production of melatonin and makes it harder then to get to sleep. A dark room with blockout curtains really can help people fall asleep quicker and stay asleep too. Heavy blinds or blockout blinds? In the bedrooms, you can put in regular blinds and they will block some of the light for sure. But blockout or blackout blinds are a lot more effective at it. You can get them in a range of styles and colours to suit any bedroom and they will completely block the light so the room is completely dark. For even better light blocking you can use those that have Mylar lining as it does not just block visible light, it blocks UV as well. You can also choose a type that will offer great heat insulation too, so the room stays warmer in the winter. Improving your infant's sleep If you are looking to improve how your child sleeps at night, and during the day for their naps, you should take a look at installing blockout curtains. If they grow up from a young age with a very dark room they will be used to the dark. You can also use a noise machine and for those that really are afraid, a very soft night light. Keep out things that create their own light like TVs, PCs, and such. These are not good for getting to sleep. Conclusion It is not just babies and children who struggle with getting to sleep. The world is more lit up at night than it ever has been and it might be impacting your sleep too. Or perhaps you or someone in the home is a shift worker and needs to sleep during the day. Having blockout window treatments in your bedroom as well as the children's could be the best decision you ever made. Get to sleep easier, stay asleep for as long as you need, wake up refreshed!
