What is Net Metering? • Solar energy owners add power to the grid are given credits under the net metering system. Extra power generated by solar panels is fed into the grid. And when the solar plants aren't working, like at night, this power may be "taken back." A "net metering" unit of solar energy causes the bi-directional electricity metre to run backwards. Customers are only charged for the "net" amount of energy used.
