His career as a government official began in 1917 when he was elected to Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's Sanitation Commission. He made the city more accessible to electricity, drainage, and sanitation. He also led major reforms in education, including the fight for recognition and payment of teachers. Contributions to Post Independence India He was Deputy Prime Minister when India gained Independence and was responsible for the Home and States portfolios and the Information and Broadcasting portfolios. He was asked to solve the most complex and difficult problem of the States' integration in the Union of India. Here is where his statesmanship, persuasion skills and tact came to full use. He dealt with the issue as only he could, reducing the number of Princely States to just 26 administrative units in less than a month and bringing democracy to almost 80 million Indians, which made up nearly 27 percent of India's total population. Vallabhbhai's crowning achievement could be called the integration of the States. This may not have been possible for him quickly and easily.
He was the Minister of Home Affairs and oversaw efforts to restore order and peace in a country ravaged by communal violence like none before. This was accomplished with the brutal efficiency of a great administrator. Role after Partition He solved the problems of the partition, restored law and order, and managed the rehabilitation of thousands upon thousands of refugees with great foresight and courage. He organized our Services, which were depleted by the British's departure, and created an Indian Administrative Service to provide stability for our new democracy. Contribution to the Congress Party Although Gandhiji presented a program for broad-based action to Congress, Vallabhbhai built the Party machinery to implement that program. He was the first to realize the importance of an effective organization. However, no one else had done so before him. He held complete control over the Party organization. Vallabhbhai Patel, one of the key architects and guardians for India's freedom, was undoubtedly a major contributor to consolidating that freedom.
