WaterVacuumPumpWorking Principle Inacurrentconfiguration,aliquidringispumpedaroundtheshaftatarate dependentonthediameterofthepumpingrotor.Inthealternative,therotorcan bemadesmallerbyusingsmallerdiametertubing.Thissmallerrotorreducesthe pump’soveralldiameterandhysteresis.Comparedtoatwo-stagepump,the workingprincipleandtestingproceduresarethesame. Toanalysethepump’sperformance,weconstructaflowgenerationcurve showingthepump’sabilitytopumpliquidfromahigherpressuretoalower pressurewithaconstantdiameterinbetween.Wefindthatthepumping efficiencyishighestforthesecondstagedesignwith10:1tubinganddropsto nearzeroat3:1orsmallerdiameter.Thereisnosignificantincreaseincyclomatic efficiencyorcreepratewithincreasingdiameterofthepumpingrotor.Flow generationresultsshowasimilartrendwithalinearrelationshipbetween diameterandefficiency.Severalpumpingschemesarestudiedincludingawide- hole,axial,andasquarepiezopump.Theresultsshowthatalloftheseschemes havesimilarscalingbehavior. Increasingthediameterofthepumprotorfrom10mmto30mmincreasesthe efficiencyofoperationfrom64% to78%.However,largerdiametertubing increasespumpingefficiencyonlyslightlywithalargercreeprate.Inthelatter case,increasingtubingdiameterto30mmfrom15mmleadstoasmall improvementinefficiencyof83%.Theresultsshowthatbothfree-unlinked pumpingandself-unlinkedpumpinghavecomparableefficiency.Thissupports theuseofliquidringsinanindustrialscalepumptoachievehighpumping efficiencies.
