Definition of serial killer: A person who commits a series of murders, often with no apparent motive and typically following a characteristic, predictable behavior pattern Many serial killers share similar characteristics that defines the nature of their true self. Crime scene are good indicators on what kind of serial killers are on their hands by certain characteristics. For example, crime scenes often reflect personality and determine many other factors. Even though each serial killer is different and distinctive in their own way. Many share common characteristics such as some type of childhood trauma that either affects them negatively now or later in their life. They often have fantasies of their killings and can be triggered by some type of event or person. There are many types of killers and are categorized by elements in their killings. Visionaries are killers who “see things” and can be driven by some other being. Missionaries need to eradicate certain groups of people and are very mission oriented in their killings. Hedonistic killers often seek the thrill of the kill and this gives them immense satisfaction. Power/control killers are in need for control and dominate in their killings, they often have sexual needs that need to be met in their killings. Within the 4 types of serial killers they can also be described as organized and disorganized. An organized killer plans their every move and already has a target in mind, they are in need of controlled scenes to fulfill their gratification. Disorganized killers are the opposite and kill at random when given the opportunity -The reality of serial killers are rare but can still happen at anytime and anywhere, it is estimated that less than 1% of all murders are committed. Serial killers have motives or reasons why they do what they do. For some its sexual gratification or a release they can only get through killing. However, some may kill for thrill, anger, and financial gain.

CHILDHOOD During childhood, Kemper was often isolated and locked in a basement infested with rats by his alcoholic mother. At an early age his parents divorced and he stayed with his mother. He was often psychologically and emotionally abused by his mother. Ed grew to hate his mother by the age of 14, and eventually ran away from home in Ed Kemper and his little sister, Allyn search of his father, but was later rejected. He then went to live with his paternal grandparents, At the age of 15, Ed Kemper was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia by his psychiatrist but later he claimed his grandmother was abusive and hated her also.
CRIMINAL ACTIVITY The nature of Kemper's crimes were extremely explicit and often included mutilating the female bodies and incorporating necrophilia at the end of his murders. His methods were not limited and included smothering, stabbing, and shooting his victims before taking them back to a discreet location. Once taken to a secure location Ed would decapitate their heads, disembody their limbs, and participate in intercourse once dead. He also admitted to consuming raw flesh, but later retracted this comment.
SIGNS Mommy Issues: He often killed young females because of his hatred toward his mother. He would target females who shared a commonality with his mother in hopes of destroying it. Childhood abuse: He received harsh treatment from both his mother and grandmother causing him to feel neglected. Disturbing games: He would play disturbing games with his sister playing out his fantasies such as “gas chamber” and “electric chair.” He would also rip the heads, legs, and arms of his sisters' dolls. Cat killer: Just like many serial killers, they start with animal brutality and in this case young Ed Kemper mutilated his family cat and the remains in his closet. Grandparents: Ed Kemper informed in a later interview that his mother would emasculate him and his grandfather causing him to blow and begin his killings.
VICTIMS In total, he had 10 victims including his grandparents, mother, his mothers best friend, and 6 college students. Although Ed has no official signature his crimes can be distinguished by his disturbing method of mutilating and separating his victims limbs and head.
TRIAL & SENTENCING Following the gruesome death of his mother he later called the police and turned himself in, but they didn’t believe him at first. He faced 8 counts of first degree murder in May of 1973, and was declared guilty by the jury. During trial, his At his trial he pleaded not guilty due to insanity, but was rejected In 1973, he was convicted of 8 count of murder Kemper asked for the death penalty, but was rejected and received imprisonment for life Ed still resides in the California Medical Facility till this day attorney asked him to plead insanity, however this was disregarded due to his psychiatrist claiming him to be sane. While awaiting trial, Ed had 2 attempted suicide failures, and requested death penalty, but was denied due to moral reasons in the state of California. For each count of murder he was sentenced to 7 years to life in prison. After spending several decades in the California Medical Facility. He has been denied parole several times, but later waived his parole in 2018, and wont be granted parole again until 2024. Ed Kemper still resides in California Medical Facility till this day resembling a model prisoner.
