Maureen Ikwamba 23 Cedar Drive Durham, NC 23408, USA Email: sms90@duke.edu Tel: +1 876 456 3423 September 7, 2020 Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to apply for an internship position at The Mandela Institute for Development Studies (MINDS) during the Southern hemisphere winter of 2014. It is through the Africa Careers Network that I have come to know about the opportunity to engage with governance, African institutions and African heritage issues. As an economics major at Duke University, my interest primarily lies in development aid and economic development. I am also quite intrigued by how strategic combinations of business and social responsibility intersect to ethically improve people’s lives. Through the mentorship of various people, I have come to understand the limitations of economics alone in resolving socioeconomic issues, and this has largely influenced the courses I choose to complement my economics major. In particular, in the spring of my freshman year I enrolled in a Development and Africa course, which mainly focused on development aid and why it is not working. With almost a book to read every week from Dambisa Moyo’s Dead Aid to Franke & Chasin’s Seeds of Famine, I was challenged to critically analyse development efforts on the continent and their unintended effects. It is this experience that encouraged the founding of the Africa Conversations Club, a platform for discussing Africa topics. The reason why I am specifically interested in MINDS is the emphasis on dialogue, inclusiveness and collaboration to achieve short and long-term goals - which is currently lacking on the continent. Given my background and ability, combined with my strong skills in math, economics and communicating, I am confident that I can add value to your organization. I am very interested in discussing an intern position at MINDS this summer. I am available to work at your Johannesburg office anytime between the end of May and mid-August. Taking time zone differences into consideration, it would be most convenient for you to reach me by email at sms90@duke.edu. I sincerely hope to hear from you soon. Thank you for your consideration. Yours Sincerely, Maureen Ikwamba
