  1. What Type Of Electric Vehicle Shall I Buy

  2. My current car is twelve years old and I am considering going all electric with my next vehicle.

  3. I say all electric, because my current car is a hybrid that has a small combustion engine as well as battery assist.

  4. I bought my current car in 2004 and it is a Honda Insight.

  5. It still gets over fifty miles to the gallon.

  6. It may well be the best vehicle that I have ever owned.

  7. It is for sure the most environmentally friendly vehicle that I have ever owned and I feel really good about that.

  8. As cutting edge as all electric vehicles may seem, the truth of the matter is that the first electric vehicle was invented in 1832 by Robert Anderson, with the introduction of his electric carriage powered by non-rechargeable battery cells.

  9. Obviously, in the years since, the technology for electric vehicles has come a very long way.

  10. When someone is considering purchasing an electric vehicle for their personal use, there are actually several different types to choose from.

  11. My Honda Insight is what is known as a hybrid electric vehicle or HEV.

  12. HEVs operate with both a gasoline engine and an electric motor.

  13. The battery for the electric motor is recharged as I drive, by harnessing the kinetic energy that is created when the vehicle is in motion.

  14. There is a gauge on my dashboard that shows the amount of kinetic energy that is being captured when the vehicle is decelerating.

  15. The battery electric vehicle, or BEV, is exactly what its name infers, a vehicle that operates entirely through the use of a battery and an electric drive train.

  16. The batteries for these vehicles are recharged both by plugging them into an external source of electricity and by the same harnessing of kinetic energy that the battery in my current car captures.

  17. Then there are the plug-in hybrid electric vehicles or PHEVs.

  18. These vehicles are powered primarily through plugging them into the power grid.

  19. They do, however, also come with a small internal combustion engine that kicks in to replace the electric drive train when the battery is low and more power is needed.

  20. And then there is the fuel-cell electric vehicle.

  21. The fuel-cell electric vehicle creates electricity from oxygen and hydrogen.

  22. The result is a water only emission vehicle.

  23. These types of vehicles are still in the developmental stage, but the technology and the impact that it can have on reducing greenhouse gases looks very promising.

  24. I have more research to do, but I am looking forward to the purchase of my next environmentally friendly, low or no fuel cost, electric vehicle.
