  1. Explain the process of soap and detergent formation. Soap is formed through a chemical process called saponification, where a fat or oil reacts with a base (usually sodium hydroxide) to produce glycerol and soap. Soaps are effective in soft water but form scum in hard water. Detergents, on the other hand, are synthetic cleaning agents made from petrochemicals and sulfuric acid derivatives. They work well in both soft and hard water and are more effective in removing greasy stains. Both help in emulsifying and washing away dirt and oils.
